Good people of TWTD 15:16 - Dec 10 with 50961 views | BrixtonBlue | I'm thinking of giving up alcohol for a year. Am I mad? Will life not be worth living? Anyone done similar?

Drinking a bottle of wine in an evening is quite excessive, and you have to be quite determined to do it. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the odd glass. But I'm mainly referring to pub-goers, and drinking to excess (drinks are also bought in 'rounds', to add to the peer pressure of not participating). Easiest sheep to spot are the men who drink with their elbows in the air, that always amuses me. Alcohol free red wine is disgusting, but it might well be improved like beer has been. Although it seems fairly obvious that the higher the alcohol content, the harder it is to replicate.

You write this guff when sober? Crivens.

You've got me worried about this drinking with elbows in the air - what does this signify and how in the air is in the air?! I'm thinking back and not sure if that's me or not

Bluemurder and BlueOyster both have strong, regularly expressed opinions on puff - who knows what experience has led to those opinions? I had a mature student mate at Uni who swore he'd never touch the stuff again, without ever saying why - doesn't agree with everyone I spose. [Post edited 11 Dec 2017 10:28]

Good people of TWTD on 10:27 - Dec 11 with 5216 views | Dyland | I did four weeks last year and found it very easy. Not sure I'd want to go a whole year though. More to do with being a fine wine bore (not a snob, mind) than wanting to get spannered for the sake of it. You're not mad. Do what you want. No big deal, and don't let anyone else dictate to you around your choices. Knowing you without knowing you, if you see what I mean, you may miss the social aspect but honestly you'll fill that with loads of other sh1t and find your creativity especially hits overdrive. Alcohol is good for socialising and calming yourself, contrary to what I've heard some people claim it's not good for creativity, unless you need a sharpener to perform in front of people e.g. in a band. Chang and acid and mary jane are far better for writing sh1t :)

I don't get it either Udders. How do you drink with your elbows in the air? I'm trying to replicate it at the moment. Do you hold the top of the glass? Then how do you get the liquid past your hand? Do you need a straw?

I just had a dry run too and reckon that elbows in the air would cause all the booze to fall out the glass. maybe that's the point? not sure...

Don't let the fact that it's against the law get in the way of your pleasure.

Good people of TWTD on 08:46 - Dec 11 by Johnny_Boy | The most important thing about giving up alcohol - is to not tell anyone about it. Go to the pub as usual. Get a round in. Get yourself a non alcoholic beer, ask the tender if they'd possibly pour it for you behind the counter - or if you tend to drink spirits, just get soda + lime. Nobody will be any wiser. Nobody will inflict peer-pressure on you to do the infuriating "C'mon, one won't hurt" thing on you. People coming round yours? Tell them to bring their own booze. You stock up on the Becks blue 0% alcohol stuff. Put all the bottles in water. Peel the labels off. Stock up your fridge. Nobody is ever the wiser as you pop open your 3rd bottle from the fridge. Yes, there's a lot of flaffing about involved hiding your abstinence, but it's much easier to deal with compared to the bullying peer pressure to sink 4 regular pints. [Post edited 11 Dec 2017 12:38]

Each to their own I suppose. I wouldn't feel comfortable in a pub without a beer, maybe an hour or so to say some hellos but beer and pubs go hand in hand so if I wasn't drinking I would watch TV or read a book at home. Also it's difficult to stay in a conversation when not drinking the same as others - well it is for me as my mates are all borderline alcoholics who talk complete drivel after a few beers.

It's like anything, if you misuse something it'll bite you. I've got a mate who freaks out at the smell of weed now, but that's just because he went through a spell of using hallucinogens and weed, had bad trips, and now all drugs are triggers for him so he has to be sober. Other people hold opinions on it because it's political, if they're a right wing libertarian they're more likely to think anyone who smokes weed is a giant loser. Because they think everyone should be out there as individual capitalists seeking profit.

So do properly prescribed drugs, which aren't used as a promotion by the pro-drug lobby.

NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories for arthritis) were actually one of the things that caused my gut to start bleeding & led to a whole host of other problem.
