All these new post-Brexit trade deals we're going to agree 08:21 - Dec 11 with 11606 viewsSteve_M

How are they going to work if the moment something is agreed half the cabinet decide to brief to the press saying nothing is agreed and we'll renege on the bits we don't like?

Do they not realise that the rest of the World can read English? It hardly represents the UK as the outward-facing trading nation that everyone will be desperate to sign deals with.

I think I'm right in saying that slavery was actually only illegal in the UK after about 1997. Before then it was assumed not to exist, but the rise of human trafficking brought about the legislation.

The 1833 Act covered the whole Empire (apart from East India Company territory), so would include the UK itself. Altho it was really a non-issue within the country between the early middle ages and modern times.

Coal, steam engines, wool. We used to be great at all of those, before the EU.

Iron bridges, sailing ships, bonnets!

The triangular trade.

Yep, musical instruments. We can make those too.

We're sorted then. We just need to trade with a nation of bonnet-wearing, triangle players who need lots of bridges that we can ship to them on our majestic sailing vessels! In an ideal world they'd like marmite and curry too.

Excuse my flippancy, but I find some of these Guardian updates somewhat desperate.

I submit that an individual who brakes a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.

The law is constantly evolving which shows that it is being challenged. Under your thought process, slavery would still be legal, and women would not have a vote for example.
