No cheating please. In what year on 02:56 - Dec 16 with 1659 views | powinswitch | When I started this thread I was certain in the answer, as it had been covered in a programme dedicated to the life of Dadabhai Naoraji by BBC Radio 4. Who was elected member for Finchley in 1892. Congratulations Eaton Blue, who got the answer I believe to be correct. Clapham Junction correctly identifies David Ochterlony Dyce Sombre, an Anglo-Indian returned as MP for Sudbury in 1841, but subsequently removed from office the following year due to bribery during his election. I would suggest that this gentleman’s name suggests his Asian credentials are less fulsome than Dadabhai’s who is universally (with the exception of the aforementioned Clapham) as being said first Asian British MP. Dadabhai was then followed by two other Indian born MPs in the period until 1929. There was then no further Asian MPs until Keith Vaz in 1987. Dadabhai was an extraordinary man, whose life story is an interest8ng read. | | | |
