Why do people make out that we have become a selling club? 20:12 - Jan 4 with 2513 viewsBluefish

We have always been one. I watched dozzell amd kiwomya sold and only this week i was reading about when Talbot was sold before I was born.

It has nothing to do with Mick or Marcus, we are what we are. Just been happy we have some players to sell. We didnt under jewell

Zzzzzzz.

If all else fails, mention a manager that left over 5yrs ago.

But he's right. We only had Wickham to sell and he was a complete anomaly compared to the state of the rest of the squad.

It's a shame we couldn't have clawed back any of the £2.2m we spunked on Lee Martin then.

Or Leadbitter.

We just ran players and their reputations into the ground back then - if they weren't aging pros already on the way down and looking for a last pay day.

Mick's turned that around very well.

But hasn't the footballing landscape changed over the last 5yrs or so?
More and more players are becoming available on frees & nominal transfers.
Bigger Premiership squads are forcing youngsters to leave much earlier to lower league clubs.
The vast sums of wealth to Premier League clubs can mean they can happily she'll out £5m on a 30yo back up keeper - the same amount we spent on our Italian #1 GK back in the day.

To simply just imply it's all Mick's handiwork is a little bit overboard.
Lots of clubs in The Championship, L1 & L2 have discovered diamonds in the last 5yrs.
Some more regularly than others.

No, Jewell in particular decided to forego transfer fees and spend it on wages for an older, more experienced team also to the detriment of any young players who might have been coming through.

His two and a half years put us miles back and also cost us a shedload of money at the same time.

Wasn't Cressy a Jewell signing?

Yes and Taylor. But they were still relative drops in the ocean compared to the other spending on wages.

Chambers was a Jewell signing too. But in general he had a shocker here, that night we stuffed West Ham was good though.

So we did have one player to sell then and a very decent one at the time.

And we only had Wickham to sell because Rhodes was sold before he could become more valuable.

Yes, but it wasn't symptomatic of us developing a squad with value, which was the point. Pretty much the rest of the squad dribbled away on frees or retired.

Yes, but when the point is made we had no one to sell at the time £8m for a teenager is not peanuts that should’ve gone a long way to developing a squad.

But we're selling players we already bought and developed as part of the overall squad. Wickham largely fell into our laps and more precisely the Academy's lap — which is also why he's an anomaly as our only sellable asset.

Maybe we'd have seen more if Jewell had stayed longer but he'd have first had to adopt a new approach given the money we were haemorrhaging on the older players.

Someone like Wickham was a one in a generation type of player for us, for a 17 year old to be so physically strong and powerful he took the league by storm. Unfortunately, not fulfilled his potential due to various reasons. The original point was made we had no one to sell at the time, yes we did a bloody big one and a youngster with huge potential.
