Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? 12:36 - Jan 16 with 2996 views | BrianTablet | Seeing as footballers are so much fitter nowadays, yet the pitch is the same size as it has always been, the result seems to be less 'space' for open football. Thus football has become a sport of 'win a free-kick', 'draw a foul', etc and is very much stop-start throughout the 90 minutes. Get rid of one outfield player and we'd have much better spectacle. Any thoughts? (You're only allowed one Jonathan Douglas joke per reply!)

Harder to cheat though, when there is no-one near you. Harder to cheat at a faster pace too.... more advantage played, etc

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 12:50 - Jan 16 with 2947 views | Darth_Koont | Absolutely. Many other sports are constantly addressing the rules to make a better spectacle and stop defensive and negative sides effectively killing the game. That's largely been ignored in football where the rules clearly benefit defenders. If getting rid of a player is too drastic then they could look at adapting the offside rule (only offside beyond a line level with the penalty area?) to stop sides squeezing play into a tiny area.

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 12:52 - Jan 16 with 2938 views | blue_oyster | This will just drive players to be even fitter, which they will have to be to cover more space. So you just prepare the move to 9-a-side, ten years later.

ok, I'm prepared. And there's a limit to physical fitness, it just hadn't been met in 1863

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 12:58 - Jan 16 with 2921 views | MattinLondon | It isn’t until you play football that you realise just how big a pitch is. A good player with a good sense of tactical awareness will always find space on the pitch. Also there won’t be additional space used as it will be ten against ten not ten against eleven.

I've played a bit of football :-) There would be loads of extra space... 7140m2 / 20 = 357 7140m2 / 18 = 396 It isn't until you've watched football evolve that you realise how fast modern players are and how hard it is to find large areas of space, i.e. the wings, and why so much of modern football is based around tippy-tappy-through-the-middle-dive-score-freekick tactics

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 13:10 - Jan 16 with 2885 views | RobTheMonk | I still think 11 a side is okay. There are so many rubbish fouls these days though. Touch someone and they fall over and get a free kick. It's a sad state of affairs when people trying to keep their feet are few and far between. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Youll still have congested penalty boxes etc, and the pace of the game is always said to help cheats.

It would make huge sense, as players are much fitter these days. They should also make the goals a little larger as players - and, especially, goalkeepers - are much taller than when the goal width & height were standardised over 150 years ago. But I doubt it will happen.

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 17:22 - Jan 16 with 2664 views | J2BLUE | No thanks. Instead have a standardised pitch size which is more suitable for flowing football. Not sure if that would actually work at some grounds but it's a better idea IMO.

Ten-a-side. Any thoughts? on 18:08 - Jan 16 with 2628 views | Rocky | I agree that we should never stop thinking of ways to improve the game. The banning of the pass back to the keeper, for instance, improved football hugely.

Ten-a-side might suit a few Sunday pub teams as well.
