Interesting story in the first of James Richardson’s new Italian football podcast. Gabriele Marcotti told the story of how Gabriel Batistuta was transferred from Fiorentina to Roma in 2000.
What happened was Roma’s manager (Fabio Capello) and director of football went to dinner with the editor of the Corriere dello Sport newspaper and convinced the editor to run a story saying that the owner of Roma had signed Batistuta. Once the story appeared in the paper the clamour from the fans for it to be true (including turning up at the owner’s house celebraintg) was basically too much for the owner to resist and Batistuta became a Roma player. They won the Scudetto the next season.
If only the Town fans of 1994 had acted similarly we might have had a very different mid 90s.
