What on earth has happened to the pitch? 17:32 - Jan 27 with 8204 viewsBluesquid

It looked well rough.
Some Wolves fans were tweeting about it aswell.

It's been needing a change for about 5 years now. All comes down to cost.

And when we rightly used to have pride in our pitch, which was regularly commented on for its beautiful & hard-wearing state, with the groundsman (a Mr Ferguson wasn't it?) winning awards for it - best pitch in the league etc.

Just another indication of how things have been allowed to slide unacceptably.

Every penny is spent on the playing side. The pitch needs a complete overhaul. It was said last season. We’ll not be doing that anytime soon.

Think it took a bit of a battering on Monday when the U23s played, was a bit rainy if I remember rightly.

No, not the club cutting corners on that too! I suppose ME has looked at it over the last few seasons and thought: 'Well, we don't use that large, rectangular green thing much as the ball is in the air the majority of the time so if we can save a few bob on that.....great!'

We basically went from a Champions league groundsman to a Non-league one

Yes but hold on — take a look at some of the footage of our pitch during the 1990s. It'd be rewriting history to say it's been universally great.

Didn’t our head groundsman go to St George’s Park?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Longer than that, more than a decade, has been one of those things which has been earmarked to be done after promotion since not long after relegation. Needs work deep down costing six figures.

This! Plus the U18s last week after the Leeds game, that’s 4 games in 2 weeks which is quite a heavy workload on the pitch at the time of the year when the pitch doesn’t get time to recover

Indeed, they wouldn't have played those two games there had the competition rules not dictated that they had to be played there. Another Youth Cup game on Tuesday, so not going to get any better!

A bit harsh on the groundsman. I suspect Alan Ferguson had more funds to use back then, than Ben Connell does now.

Having said that, Alan Ferguson is now head groundsman at the England training camp, for very good reason.

Thats an easy out for the club Phil, what deep down work is needed? Obviously huge issues with light and air in most football grounds but with good agronomic procedures there is no reason it should be in the state it is now. The amount of water that has been poured on it artificially over the last few years (MM's needs apparently?) has obviously saturated it to the extent that all we see game after game is players slipping over and the pitch cutting up!

Feck me, MM now responsible for the state of the pitch ??

what next ? his evil tentacles behind the Orwell bridge closures, or FBI files indicating a hand in the Rendelsham forest cover up ?

It’s far from unusual for the manager to have a say in how the pitch is prepared and watered in particular. He’ll want a surface that suits his tactical plans <reaches for tin hat>

Indeed, our terrible pitch contributed the Bryan Gunn bobble. It isn’t all bad.
