Anyone have experience of living in the Caribbean? 14:32 - Feb 12 with 6847 viewsSE1blue

I've just been offered a job in the Bahamas (Nassau) and whilst yes, this sounds like an incredible opportunity, does anyone have experience of what life is really like in the Bahamas or similar?

Forget your worries & take the leap ! There's a great bunch of people on the island including ( wAit for it ) my new best bud from Norwich .. forget crime statistics ! Unless your a gang member it really does not apply to you here ! What school are you headed to ?

I worked on cruise ships and I got to see Nassau one day a week for nearly a year. Always enjoyed the place for its beaches, a couple of decent bars, the amazing casino and great golf but to be honest that was about it. We were always warned of the dangers especially as one crew member on another ship was shot dead for not handing over her money when robbed.
This was about 10 years ago so it may have changed. If unsure I would recommend you go spend a week there on holiday. Travelling is great and I would always recommend it but personally there are a lot of other countries I would prefer to live in.

I believe the Disney cruises no longer stop there due to muggings and even some cases of rape.
Stopped there for a day a few years ago on a cruise and as nice as the front strip around the port is we were advised to not venture inland for obvious reasons.
Basically 90% of the population live in poverty and rely on the cruise ships to sell tat to.

All men and women are created, by the, you know the, you know the thing.

Consider this a solid “vouching”

Jim is a mate of mine and when he told us he was moving to Nassau we all thought “yeah right”
But it has worked out very well and those of us without useful trades are all quite jealous back here!

That's not the case mate ! 100% overreaction by yanks ! I live west about 3 miles from the cruse port with locals & have many local friends and zero crime in 5 years ! Yes there's poverty but not for that reason ! Employment is high here

It's a teaching role, so at least a year.

So my girlfriends friend and her hubby moved to the capital towards the back end of last year, they lasted a matter of weeks as far as I recall before returning back to the UK. He got a job as a teacher and her plan was to work within the tourism industry. From what I gathered, and all of this could be corroborated and elaborated if I chat to the Mrs, it was the teaching side of things that didn't work out.

Interesting.

I'd love to know which school if you're still in touch with them.

Don’t know I am afraid. All I got on inquisition was that he wasn’t happy with the agency and something about the school which really isn’t helpful I know. It’s probably more telling that they then tried Hong Kong and are already back from there so maybe you shouldn’t read too much into any of this and their experience.
