MM Permanent Midfield Signings 16:22 - Feb 13 with 7511 views | Smithy | Is Skuse the only real decent one (even some would disagree with this) Huws and Adeyemi I both like but until they actually play some games its difficult to call them a success or not. Ward (frustrating player) and Anderson maybe at a push, but anyone else decent seems to have been a loan. Sort of highlights the problem really.

That's a terrible suggestion. In fairness the midfield was fine in the play off season but then we had a fit Teddy Bishop and two wide men (albeit limited ones) and we've rarely had either of those things since and that's left the midfield unbalanced.

Why is it a terrible suggestion? I think he'd do a job there.

You really need to ask why it's a terrible suggestion? Blimey. He is the best midfielder we have in terms of reading the game and breaking up play, he doesn't have the pace or the legs to get up and down the flank for 90 minutes from full back and he's not played that position in years so would be incredibly rusty positionally. Those are just a few reasons why it'd be a terrible idea.

MM Permanent Midfield Signings on 18:08 - Feb 13 with 5590 views | chicoazul | No CM has really nailed down a position alongside Skuse due to injury mostly. Hyam Bishop Adeyemi and Huws all stick out, Douglas simply ran out of legs in his second season. I think this is something to do with the way we rehab the players who do the most running once they get injured and the fact that Mick bristles strongly at any suggestion of that makes me think I am on to something. Connolly is obviously doing well but he is new to the Ipswich way of doing things fitness wise and hasnt had to be rehabbed yet. [Post edited 13 Feb 2018 18:09]

To be fair the midfield wasn't great under Keane, Jewell and Jim.

No thats not what he said! he was saying that the trouble with our midfield is that the two central mid's are defenders both of them their second choice position would be at right back !

Don't Everton consider Connolly to be a right back?

You have no point. I didn't go off on one, I pointed out a number of valid reasons why moving Skuse to right back is a terrible idea (as if it actually needed pointing out). We get it, you don't like Skuse.

We need to play our players in their correct position. This is very basic stuff. Most of our players including Cole are fairly limited, they need to do one job and do it well and as part of a team.

Sorry, but it is just not good enough for a midfield player to be good at one aspect of play. Arguably, because of his lack of pace, Skuse is not very good at what some people see as his essential value to the team.

World football is full of those nippy holding midfielders.

At the level we are at and the players we have to be realistic about what they can do. We are not a progressive, passing side this may come as a surprise to you. CS is a limited player who does an OK job for the basics he is suppose to do, no more, no less.

It is the second tier of English football. I know that the football in the Championship does tend to be a bit frantic, but good football is being played, and successfully, notably by Wolves of course, but also Fulham are a shining example of how it can work. To just accept that we are a hoofball side is not good enough for me , and given the dwindling attendances , not good enough for an awful lot of supporters either.

If he's so good at reading the game he'd find RB a lot easier than CM, it's a stroll in comparison. Granted, he wouldn't be a flying wing back, but that's not what the conversation was about, it's suggesting him at RB. He may be 'rusty' but training helps with that, so don't panic. Also, it would remove him from midfield meaning we can use better midfielders to play there. Win win!

Actually it's been a problem for 10 years. Ever since Jim's first transfer window with Evans' money and we started accumulating expensive yet flawed centralish midfielders with no obvious plan. Moving to a younger midfield (Huws, Ward plus our youngsters) that we can build on seems finally to be a plan. In that scenario Skuse as experience and a literal anchor point makes real sense.
