Today I shall drink my last alcohol for a year 08:03 - Feb 18 with 7585 viewsBrixtonBlue

Some of you may recall I was toying with the idea of giving up alcohol for a year... well I've decided to do it, and have chosen today's derby as the day to begin the challenge.

As I said before, I'm going to be writing about the experience (partly as a motivation to keep going), so who knows, there may even be a book at the end of it (at the very least there'll be a year of my life documented, which will be interesting for me to look back on in years to come).

It's something I've been thinking of doing for a few years, and something I kind of need to do now. Plus I want to do it while my parents are still alive. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just old! My dad's 82 this year so if I don't do it soon he won't get to see it!

Anyway, let's hope my last drink is of celebration rather than commiseration. COYB.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Giving up booze for a year is hardly crazy is it.

To a regular drinker it is.

Isn't it?

Let's say you have 60 drinking years in your life, what help is a year off going to help?

It's like giving up fags for a year.

Yea I know, hard to cut it out though.

Need to find something healthier that I like drinking as much. I like tea and have started to drink more of it. Sadly the Pepsi has become part of my unwind from work ritual. I have a bottle on standby every night.

Truly impaired.

Why don’t you just cut it down? Limit yourself in some other way.

Taking one year won’t help surely? In the long run I mean.

Not having a go Rommers but it's precisely this reason why I take so much issue with gambling getting such a negative reaction on here. Dolly has posted that he needs to do this. Suggests he isn't really sure where he stands with alcohol. We then have people saying it's not a good idea and why doesn't he just cut down. If this was gambling, drugs or anything else and he has suggested it might be an issue we'd all be encouraging him. With alcohol people are suggesting he should just cut down.

There is a blind spot where alcohol is concerned. Drinking excessively is seen as cool for some reason. People should be reading his post, seeing the bit about needing to do it and encouraging him to succeed.

Truly impaired.

I refer you to my second post in the thread. I've tried "just cutting down". It doesn't work for me.

I may well not bother starting again if I make it to a year. A year's just the current goal.

I would agree. Used to be similar to J2 (not as much quantity wise) and now just replace it with water. Feel so much better drinking 2 + litres of water a day.

Yes once you get used to drinking it, as soon as you drink a bit less you feel horrid!

I would encourage anyone to drink more water, many health benefits and as you say much more energy and feel good factor.

Good luck to you. I gave up for a month in 2013 and then just carried on for 12 months. Didn't lose much weight, but slept better and really didn't miss the alcohol after the first few weeks. Only issue was it that it did get boring when socialising and everyone else was knocking back alcohol and getting merrier/less inhibited. It was often quite shocking to see how silly you get when knocking back the alcohol.

Maybe just tell people you're doing it for Lent and then carry on. Better not to draw attention to it as it then becomes an issue.

excellent. well done. i hope it all goes well. don't forget to tell us how it all went in 12 months time. until then it will be our little secret, eh.

Don't want to be all negative but do you have drinking issues?

I always think there is an underline issue when people that do these crazy things

And if he thinks he may have an issue with the nectar from heaven, then he probably has.

Writing a book about it is something I'd take the p1ss out of (nicely) if it was my family or close friend. But honestly, whatever works for individuals innit.

Personally if I didn't still drink heavily or consume other naughties, maybe I'd be happier or sadder. I've never tried to stop for any more than a few weeks so I don't know. And as it stands I don't intend to find out, simply because I don't think I have an issue. Some people I know disagree, but hey ho.

I do however have enforced days off the pop. Which I guess suggests an issue in one sense, but the reality for each individual and situation is pretty nuanced and not as straightforward as some make out.
