Today I shall drink my last alcohol for a year 08:03 - Feb 18 with 7609 views | BrixtonBlue | Some of you may recall I was toying with the idea of giving up alcohol for a year... well I've decided to do it, and have chosen today's derby as the day to begin the challenge. As I said before, I'm going to be writing about the experience (partly as a motivation to keep going), so who knows, there may even be a book at the end of it (at the very least there'll be a year of my life documented, which will be interesting for me to look back on in years to come). It's something I've been thinking of doing for a few years, and something I kind of need to do now. Plus I want to do it while my parents are still alive. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just old! My dad's 82 this year so if I don't do it soon he won't get to see it! Anyway, let's hope my last drink is of celebration rather than commiseration. Today I shall drink my last alcohol for a year on 08:16 - Feb 18 with 3350 views | GlasgowBlue | Good luck mate. I did it for three years. The first few weeks will be the hardest because it will have become a habit. Maybe opening the fridge and drinking a bottle of beer after a long day at work. Going out with friends. But after a couple of weeks I didn’t even think about it. When you are out with friends they may say to you that one won’t hurt and as long us you are cutting back you’ll still be healthy. That’s wrong. One leads to two etc. Once again good luck. If I can think of anything else from my experience I’ll let you know. Ps. You may find yourself a bit preachy about not drinking. Like Callis is with Veganism. My Mrs said I was a pain in the arse looking down at people who enjoyed a drink.

Cheers Glassers. I've already had a couple of mates saying just cut down a bit, there's no need to be that drastic. But I've tried 'just cutting down a bit' and I always slip back into my old ways. As Pop Will Eat Itself once sang; "One's too many, ten's not enough". I did a couple of months a few years ago and didn't find it too hard. But I also found myself doing less, going out less. That's another reason for doing the book - it's going to be very dull if I don't get out there and do stuff. As I mentioned before, I'm performing my comedy poetry more this year (have already done a couple of gigs) so that will be detailed in the book (along with the poems themselves). Working title is Dry Humour! People poo-pooed the idea before but it gives me some motivation. At the very least I'll get some more writing practice, which is never a bad thing. I don't think I'll be too preachy. I get a bit of stick off mates for having a personal trainer and I tend to just laugh it off rather than get preachy (about their beer bellies, for example), so hopefully I'll be the same with booze. Cheers for the advice. Are you off to a pub to watch the game? I'm wondering whether to tell my mates before we start, or at the end of the session, that these will be my last drinks for a year.

Today I shall drink my last alcohol for a year on 08:33 - Feb 18 with 3303 views | Herbivore | Good luck with it. There are loads of alcohol free craft beers knocking around now if you find you're missing the taste of beer, personally I bloody love drinking so would really struggle to give it up. Fair play to you. Surely you're going to have to give up your season ticket though? Watching Ipswich totally sober every week is going to be your biggest hurdle.

Or maybe say nothing so they don’t start to put pressure on you. I’ll watch the game in the house with my boy. The local pub will probably have some Scottish game on. Edit. You be back on the booze tomorrow when Corbyn gets arrested for espionage 🤨 [Post edited 18 Feb 2018 8:44]

Not always. I did it when I tuned 50 and wanted to lose some weight and get healthy, as I had a young family and wanted to stick around a bit longer. I only intended to stop for three months but I just carried on going.

Is that when the Coke Zero addicted started? I could give up alcohol for as long as you want but ask me to give up Pepsi Max/Coke Zero and I struggle to go a day.

Have your teeth suffered? I'm down to about 2L on days I work. Days off anywhere from 3-4L. Absolute madness.

Let's face it, the season will be over after today, ,so less to get annoyed about. But yeah, fair point!

Sugar free but loaded with other stuff like acid, sweeteners and colours.

Today I shall drink my last alcohol for a year on 09:42 - Feb 18 with 3091 views | Guthrum | Hope it goes well. Not given up for a whole year, but have done for several months at a time in the past. Several friends of mine no longer drink alcohol, or only extremely rarely. There's a load more in the way of non-alcoholic options than was the case years ago (used to be just gassy coke/lemonade, lime & soda or chemical lager substitutes) and you're no longer looked at oddly if you order them at the bar. Good thing, as it means you can avoid alcohol without inhibiting pub socialising.

Probably be Birds Eye cod fish fingers as it's very pleasant.

Isn't it? Let's say you have 60 drinking years in your life, what help is a year off going to help? It's like giving up fags for a year.
