How have they got themselves in that much debt? They were in the Premier League for quite a few seasons and must have a substanital parachute payment behind them.

Sunderland, when in the PL, usually had one of the higher wage bills, maybe the 8th highest. I reckon it was because no decent player fancied going there unless he was given a decent wedge. Ticket prices there have always been low as well.

I wonder if that's part of the problem the North-East clubs have the moment - the distance from London make players balk at the move? The North-West clubs would have a problem but they're further south than Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough and, in the case of the Manchester sides and Liverpool, have more money and support to start with.

am I being stupid here, but they are pretty much down anyway, couldn't they go into admin, the clubs debts wiped out, and they start again??

Sunderland are not "pretty much down" - they are 3 points from safety, with 13 games to go. If they went into admin, they would be subject to a 10 point penalty & guaranteed relegation.
Also, if Short put them into admin, he would bet zero back. He can still write off the debt due to him & get something back (he was hoping for £50m). Bit like Evans & Town.

I would agree its a factor. I would add the North West does have some wealthy areas that are attractive to players plus the clubs and cities are close to each other meaning it's a pretty good social life.

I used to date a girl from Wilmslow, she also showed me the 'area' a lot of the players lived, its certainly not grim in that part of the North.

I do feel it's been a factor in attracting players to our club too, especially with London so close with a fantastic social life and many colleagues from diverse backgrounds to socialise with especially if you are not from the UK. I do wonder why we are not looking at Dutch football more with good links from Harwich and Norwich airport. I think for young players a bit of familiarity and links to your family are very important.
