How many times do you need to think that you want to give up boozing.... 08:05 - Mar 5 with 14073 viewsitfcjoe

....before you actually do?

Just as a note, I'm not the sort of bore that wakes up with a hangover and says "I'm never drinking again", however my hangovers are now so severe that they render me useless for the day.

Had 8 pints on Saturday evening, nothing major, but was sick as a dog yesterday, couldn't keep down any food or drink and was on Dad duties as wife out for the day. I just laid there whilst he climbed over me trying not to be sick, and having to put him in his high chair when I was being sick.

Felt such a tw*t, he's too young to remember how boring a day he had - but won't be soon.

Problem is I love going to the pub, love drinking and socialising with my mates - but just can't handle the hangovers.

How old are you Joe? It took me until I reached 50 to start suffering with bad hangovers. Before that I could drink like Oliver Reed and be as fresh as a daisy the next day.

I came to the conclusion that hangovers are your body’s way of telling you to slow down.

Drink lower ABV
8 pints of 3.8% should have left you groggy but ok to get on with things. Use pubs with good reputation for quality beer. You would be amazed about poor practices in hard pressed pubs to try and save money on line cleaning.
Mix up the drinks with a pint or two of water - Its free by law.

Other that I keep telling myself I should stop but enjoy the taste and the sociability aspect like you.

8 pints is major. I think I may have detected part of your problem.

A lot of it depends on what you are drinking, a great deal of the craft beers and dark ales give me a monstrous hangover, Crouch vale Brewers gold does not, Jamesons Irish doesn't give me a monster.

Worth experimenting.

Since my little one was born I’ve made a bit more of an effort not to get to a state where I’m useless the next day. I’ve had one bad hangover since & that was in a work day so I went in & slumped at my desk.

To prevent these hangovers I’ve started drinking a couple of pints of water when I get home, seems to work quite well.

Honestly it amazes me that people expect to drink 8 pints of beer and wake up full of vim and vigor the next day especially when they get into their 30s. Try drinking 4 instead of 8 maybe.

I'm kinda happy with my no drinking on a school night approach and enjoying a few of the weekend.

I went a bit crazy on Saturday (Stereophonics @Wembley 9/10) and expected a hangover in the morning but was somehow fine. Met a mate and family for lunch yesterday (Woolpack 9/10), had 3 pints plus a G&T and feel rubbish this morning.

As others have noted, it's an age thing, I'm sure of this.

To be honest it is probably the last 7 or 8 years where it has got really bad, which is a ridiculously long time in reality. I used to be absolutely fine but now can't function.

I get to a certain level of drunk where decision making, and memory black outs occur, although I appear fine to everyone else and if that has happened I get a 2 day anxiety ridden hangover where I am (physically) sick all day every time I eat or drink, or move too quickly

Like others have said - work out what you can drink in large volumes. Lay off the high ABV pints ( as a quick check - 8 pints at 5% is equivalent in alcohol content of 11 pints at 3.8%)

Or just slow down - if you're going out just for the evening - mix in some pints of water with your beers. Its not a competition.

I find that walking home rather than getting a cab is always good - settles you down. Even better if you top it with some food and another pint of water.

Think you just need to plan your drinking days accordingly. If Sunday was your day as Mrs Joe was elsewhere, then don't go out on the Saturday!

Our kids are older (10 & 8) but still need a certain amount of care given we don't want to plant them in front of tellies or tablets all day, so on the VERY VERY VERY rare occasion that I get to go out, I'll ensure Mrs SWGF is free the following day because I'll be a useless lump all day, probably sauntering between bed and bathroom for the most part.

However, as I say, I rarely drink since I've had kids anyway (have only had a beer once since last year) but when I do, I do...as you may see in Bristol city centre in a couple of Saturday evenings' time!

That is my usual rule, issue is now that my wife works Saturdays so i have my boy, and then Sunday is our only family day of the week so hangover's don't go down overly well.

I've given it up for months at a time previously, and not had that many issues - but struggle with going to football as that is my 'day out', and feel under pressure to drink on big days out

You don't need to drink to enjoy yourself Joe.

But if you like a tipple, I'd suggest:

1. Look at 'what' you drink.
2. Scale back

It would appear that there are considerably more ticks in the negative column than the positive one of continuing to drink. If you 'know' that you 'need' to stop drinking then once should be enough. This was certainly the case with me and roll ups after my daughter was born.
As an ex fairly heavy drinker as well you will be amazed at how much less 'enjoyable' pub banter is when you are sober. Embrace the 'new' future and basically believe and act on what you are telling yourself!
After a break you may decide to carry on in moderation or not at all.

Went out on Saturday night with R_I_G and yesterday was pretty much a no show. Thing is, it's not even like I have a hangover, I get terribly bad guts when drinking, and spend most of the day on the loo.

It's annoying, because I just physically can't make myself sick (I think if I was sick, that would almost certainly get it out of my system), instead it comes out the other end and have to be at home all day for the fear of not sh*tting myself!

Quite. I realise, in retrospect, that this was why I tended to get bad hangovers on a Saturday in my 20s when I went out after work. I'm quite fussy on the whole now but did have three pints in the bar opposite work on Friday - it's crap but very close - then another when I got home and had a low grade headache all day on Saturday.

2 pints of water on getting home with 2 Ibuprofen and some carbs.

Drink 4% and less. Avoid craft beer. This works for me but appreciate that everyone is different.

I've noticed now I'm in my mid 40s that what used to be a morning hangover, has evolved into first of all, an all day one, then a two day one, now it's practically a three dayer. The step outlined in my top line has helped that a bit, now I'm just knackered the whole of the day after.

I think, as quite a few posts have alluded to, that the best way forward may be to cut down on the drinking rather than trying to give up altogether. That may mean not going out so much, rather than being the guy who goes out and drinks coke all night, or when going out cut the length of the session back.
