That is sad.

As you say, one of the greats from the time that I used to go to speedway.

R.I.P.

One of the greats from when I started going as a kid, along with Olsen, Crump and all the Witches stars - Sanders, Louis etc

He absolutely hated Foxhall, one of his least favourite tracks.

Great rider and well ahead of his time in terms of sponsorship etc, alas he suffered from Alzheimers for the last 5 plus years of his life

I could only name 3 or so speedway riders; Mauger, Sanders, Louis [and Nicholls?].

Was taken to a few Witches races, never got into it... but the fact I knew his name meant I thought he'd been a Witches rider... a quick peak at Wiki tells me I'm wrong.

I saw him race at Exeter where the 'fencing' on turn 3/4 was 1" thick sheet metal. There was no hesitation just supreme confidence in his own ability not to hit it (60 mph and no brakes).

That was a golden era for speedway.
I only went for about five years from 1972 but in that time Olsen and Mauger were THE superstars- as you say, along with some Witches greats.

Probably the same period for me. Mates from school back straight. 2 buses and a walk - kids wouldn't do it now. Somewhere in the loft is the witch shaped scoreboard by dad made for me.

He leaves a daughter who still lives in central Ipswich.
