Certainly don’t recall him in the first team, but I could be wrong.

Was Keane that signed him, Paul Jewell who let leave.

Players develop. Sometimes potential is not seen or not valued. When managers need instant success it is not in their interest to focus on players that might be good enough 6 years later. Also, some of the players in the squad of a team challenging at the top will be no better than players in those at the bottom. I don't think Hourihane is one of their better players. How much has he featured this season? Is he likely to play much part for them next? In fact, could he be worth looking at as a loan signing if they did go up? Would he improve our team?

Keane recruited Hourihane. He was released by Town under Jewell in July 2011. He probably wasn't ready to play in the Championship & needed to rebuild his career in the 4th tier.

Oh I see. Out of interest Phil, as it's never been raised on here before, who do you think was worse out of those two?

Actually it was Keane who signed him. Jewell released him at the same time as he signed Bowyer and Bullard ... a little microcosm of where we were going wrong as a club.

So I hear. Though Keane barely used him or looked like using him.

He was a very young and inexperienced player. We always need players like that for the future but particularly under Jewell we went short-term and seemed to throw anything long-term away.

I think Jewell let him go without seeing enough of him. He gave him a six-month deal to impress him, then sent him on trial to Plymouth with a view to him going out on loan. They said they'd like to sign him on a permanent basis and PJ let him go.

Ah, Jewell's much vaunted long term plan.
