Tories desperately seeking ways to stop the poor from voting 07:46 - Apr 28 with 7664 viewsGeoffSentence

Testing out photo id before allowing people to vote using a problem which barely exists as an excuse.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43932073

Of course the people least likely to have such ID are least likely to be the comfortab!y off people who vote for them.

You have to admire how they work tirelessly to fix the elections.

As part of the ‘pilot’ I have to say that being expected to turn up with your poll card in hand is hardly onorous. Most people remember their tickets when going to the football.

Erm, that's not what is being asked for? They are asking for ID to be provided.

The poll card delivered to your house counts as ID.

Maybe in your area, but they are also piloting photo ID. The evil witch Chloe Smith is on the Beeb talking about it now.

It may be where you live but, where I live you can''t vote if you don't have your Poll Card, which those overseeing events at the polling station, compare to the list of voters & mark it off when you present it.
What a lot of people complain about is, this card carries a voter number which then allows anyone to, if they have the time or desire, to see how you voted.
Showing an ID is something different

Most of the fraudulent use of voting is generally in the less affluent constituencies where the winner is the socialist candidate !

Just get a provisional one - hey presto you have a proper ID when you need one.

Only if they have the access , and the time available , to trawl through the voting papers , generally stored in a secure place !

Not a perfect solution but I do think there should be some way of proving your identity. Don't even need a voters card at the moment, just turn up and say anyone's name.

Obviously electronic voting would be the paradigm going forward but we won't see that for a while.

They cost £34. That's not an expense you can afford purely for the sake of having a photo ID if you're on a low income.

You're essentially saying that low income people have no way of proving their identity.

Isn't that a more of an issue?

All photo ID costs money, if you don't plan on driving or going abroad and you're on a low income you won't bear the cost of applying for a passport or driving licence. There are other forms of free, non-photo ID but some of the pilot areas are asking for photo ID for voters and that's an issue.

a national id card would solve this problem and many others.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I understand all that.

My point was that as it stands you are saying there is no way they can prove who they are to the police or anyone else. That can't be the right way to have things.

A different issue to the voting specific discussion I realise.

Free ID cards is the solution if you think it ought to be mandatory for people to have a form of photographic ID.

"Don't even need a voters card at the moment, just turn up and say anyone's name."

That couldn't happen where I vote, even though they know me they still take my voter card, compare with the number on the list and mark it to show I have voted.

I confess I thought that was the rule
