And came across the videos of street parties when Thatcher died. Literally thousands of people in the centre of London partying. I couldn’t believe it.
I understand the hatred towards her and knew people celebrated but actual parties?!? Blimey.
Did anyone on here go out celebrating? Just wondering really. +
*Fwiw, I didn’t like the woman from the bits of heard and knew of her.
For better or worst Thatcher had huge implications on people's lives, and beyond that of your normal Prime Minister. While the simplistic view is it is wrong to celebrate the death of someone, many people, rightly or wrongly, were so profoundly impacted by her policies they saw her as evil.
I was driving an 8 year old slave junior back from Colchester zoo when the news came on the radio. I let out a very loud "yes!", she said "what is it?" to which I replied "someone died" and then explained as best I could. How we laugh about it to this day.....thanks for the memories Rommers!
Edit....still have the home made 'ding dong' badge that I wore for weeks afterwards in the sock drawer.

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
She was an effective Prime Minster but one whose actions have lead to many of the problems we now face and she has ultimately changed the country for the worse. That said, street parties aren't acceptable for that sort of person.

Yes, she was a genuinely horrible, nasty piece of work. Tories adore her for that. Take your pick.

Blimey, which porn site were you looking for to come across that?
(Figuratively speaking)
I was actually trying to find the words to that Allez Allez Allez liverpool song they keep singing. I couldn’t understand a single word but the tunes been stuck in my head. From there, a video linked to Liverpool fans celebrating thatchers death at Sunderland away and from there to the street parties.

No porn. Not tonight anyway.
You would be hard pressed to find many people on the northern side of the divide who liked Thatcher

One of my example case studies when I did my law a level was the Hills rough disaster and how viewers at the time were affected both in person and through TV screens.
One 90 minute documentary we watched on the aftermath of it and public and political reaction shocked me. Thatchers comments and coldness on the subject made me instantly dislike her.
I’m not one for politics so I’ll leave those reasons aside but I know a few of her policies tended to suit the richer rather than the working class.

She sold off large parts of the manufacturing sector and the mines. Whilst the mines were inefficient, none of the money gained from the privatisation was re-invested into the deprived communities and there was a great level of unemployment and regional inequality, which there still is today. I appreciate there needed to be changes after the Winter of Discontent and that the taxes were too high but a lot of her solutions were just kicking the can down the road IMO and they created a massive wealth divide.
I didn't like her at all, heartless and calculating woman who cared little about the hurt she caused.
However, partying and celebrating an old lady's death is pretty weird and very distasteful. Particularly when most of the people in question were too young to remember the Thatcher years. Difficult to take the moral high ground over the 'nasty' Tories when you're out celebrating someone dying....

Whereas.....
Can't tell if you're serious above with your post but if so you showed a real lack of class. Anyone celebrating the death of someone like that while their family grieve should take a look at themselves.
It's a shame the news didn't embarrass a lot of the idiots on the news by asking them questions about Thatcher or even why they were there. Most of them probably didn't know.
I think celebrations were wrong, street parties never really kicked off, even in NI where the hurt in some areas would have been very real. Bad times under her, although some families bought their council homes and never looked back .

Plenty that celebrated knew all about her. Do you think she had sleepless nights over those that died through implementing her political vision. F#ck her and all who sail in her.....evil bitch! Hopefully that's clear enough!

I can understand rejoicing at the death of Thatcherism. There's a distinction in my mind, and it hasn't happened yet anyway, all that happened then was an old lady who gave her name to it died.

Unfortunately, for the people you’re talking about, China happened. Thatchers government should have offered compensation to those affected i.e miners, but the government isn’t responsible for planning the entire economy

It's hard to comprehend if you didn't live through that era. I didn't attend a party, nor do I condone them, but I can understand them. It's one of those where you had to be there to appreciate it Rommers.
Much of what is wrong with this country stems from her the divide is those who recognise that fact and those that ignore it. To give an example - she de-nationalised the gas and electricity supply. We now find ourselves buying power and heating from nationalised companies in France and Germany. Just one instance of the madness that was thatcherism. Yes I cheered at her demise but for me it should have happened 30 years sooner.

I remember Phil taking down a number of provocatively celebratory threads on here when it happened, but I just as equally remember visiting the Barnsley forum shortly after her death as we were playing them. Barnsley fans are the most mild-mannered bunch you will ever encounter, but the depth of their anger with her was palpable.
That's a fair pile of assumptions you've jumped to there.....
