brexit funding 10:09 - May 11 with 4978 viewsNo9

should we accept this or is it an affront to democracy to just let it go with small (relatively) fines as a slp on the wrists? A £70k fine is a pitance isn't it?
Does this define the levels of corruption in the funding of 'Leave' or is it the tip of the iceberg?

meh looks much of a muchness, remain did similar things with the setting up of several groups pre campaign for about 1m and spent about 5-10m on campaigning pre the official campaign.
seems brexit were doing basically the same thing.

i don't think democracy is affected until you censor campaigns

probs tip of iceberg

It is of a similar level to fines which have previously been imposed on parties for election spending offences. It would be difficult to treat this as a special case just because it's Brexit.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I think social media is more of an affront to democracy with all its lies, and leading up to the next general election all service providers should be blocked

The point is breaking the law isn't it?
The fine is for breaking the rules - not for telling lies. There is a difference.

Isn't the lady responsible under police investigation with a view to facing criminal charges?

I believe that is what the article says.
But, it is the tip of a very unsavoury iceberg & we shouldn't let this go.

If the police are investigating then it is not being let go is it? What do you want them to do?

The bit about the banks, including Aaron, has only just come out, the EC have not looked at that yet.
If the banksk are right the size of cash involved increases considerably and may include others.

As I said - tip of the iceberg

The biggest afront to democracy is the funding of a campaign to derail brexit.

That isn't illegal is it?
How brexit was funded was
But is't it an afront to democracy when a few multi millionaires - some from overseas can buy an election?
If you treasure democracy wouldn't you want to stop that?

So when is the Govt going to get fined for spending £9m of our money on bits of paper that mostly ended up in the bin?

The Government £9m of taxpayers money on blatant propaganda so there's always the other side that plays dirty tricks. Not great from Leave.EU you, however it doesn't warrant anything more than a fine just because it's for the referendum.

You call it propaganda, but that document has been fairly prophetic so far. Maybe they should have released something neutral, that’s a fair call, but there also happens to be a lot of factual info in it. And it explains what the Leave options could be, so it’s not completely one-sided (although still very much so).

If criminal charges are proven this very much warrants the appropriate punishment, irrespective of the purpose of the campaign (same applies to any political campaign, on any side).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Strange how you fail to mention that the Lib Dems had earlier been fined £18,000 for one offence, that others have also been fined, on both sides, and the main remain and leave groups are still under investigation. The one thing you can be sure of, with social media, is that you will rarely find an individual willing to provide a balanced view.

Social media is good at reinforcing views already held but rarely influences someone to change their position.

Top of the top of the iceberg. It was reported earlier in to the week that one of the Leave groups incurred £18m of expenses outside the rules, invoicing a day or so before the spending rules actually took force. Banks' company provided a lot of facilities and staff free of charge too

Yep, everyone seems to be at it. It seems like the Electoral Commission have raised complaints about campaign for all parties/causes lately. I’d like to see a few harsh sentences where any criminal activity is proven to try and stamp it out. I’ll hope in vain I suspect.

I didn't know the Lib-Dems had been fined, nor where.

The Electoral commission is there to deal with these things but, as it is underfunded can't be as quick as it should be.

The government has a duty, to provide the voters with information that will affect them.
Presently it looks like the issues are very much as forecast.
Now the Leave campaing don't want to leave they just don't want to contribute to the club

Doing a quick bit of research it is reported the Lib-Dems were fined for not properly reporting & A Remain group £1,250.

That is not the same as breaking the law is it?

I believe is that democracy in this country is finished, 72% turnout, that will never happen again.

We would have never required a further referendum if the parties of all persuasions had not dug us deeper and deeper into political union, lied about doing it and led the country where it did not want to go.

Free trade, a common market, that is all that is required.

Can you throw freedom of movement into that last sentence please?

Pronouns: He/Him/His. "Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."

Yes ok partly agreed, we require unskilled and skilled labour and trades.

We do not require to import unemployment.
