What I mean by this is how would you rate your tolerance of others? I find it a sad by product of the world that you have to tolerate certain people and certain things because you likely suffer if you don't. I've found that out first hand. I had a boss who I liked, thought he was a really decent bloke and he used to value the work I did. We all got on well in our team, used to socialise etc. Anyhow, on nights out he started chatting women up and would then take him home. He was married with kids and a few of us use to hate it. Eventually some of the group stopped going out, a few went out and pretended to be fine with it, others genuinely were. Not speaking of myself entirely but those that remained matey or pretended to be fine with his antics ended up in better paid positions than those that stopped hanging out with them all. Having bumped into Town it reminded me how much we, as people, have to grin and bear all manner of people in all walks of life for the sake of many things. So on a scale of 1 to 10 do you just ignore these people and refuse to interact with them whatever the cost or are you happy being friendly to everyone, listening to their nonsense and nodding and smiling as you know that it'll help you advance? Couldn't help feeling slightly annoyed that your life and earning capacity can be so dramatically different whether you suck up to complete idiots or give them a wide berth! If your neighbours do something everyone would think is out of order do you just ignore it and bite your tongue or march right round there and have it out with them?

I know it's obvious but I just try to keep it simple and avoid anyone I think is a tosspot. Small, close group of mates who never really have any issues with each other.

If you're a knob, you're a knob. Doesn't matter what you could potentially do for me in terms of career/contacts or whatever. Went for an interview a few years back and the boss was such a knobsocket that I refused a second interview when offered- wouldn't want to be in the same room as the guy, let alone work for him.

Thankfully I'm in a position where I can pick and choose who I associate with, even at work where we select new recruits on personality. Others aren't so lucky I know, but I've put up with enough idiots in my life to enjoy where I am now!

I once went for an interview where I didn't like the boss. I lasted two months before leaving. He was once on the phone to a company we dealt with and he actually said, word for word: "An hour of my time is worth two of anyone else's". I cringed.

Ha! Importance is like wealth, isn't it. Those with it don't really talk about it; those without it won't stop banging on about it. Like a good book, the point is to show not tell, unless you're one of these brash American types, obviously.

You got a comment instead which outranks an upvote any day of the week - worth two at least. In fact, you've got two comments now, so that's 4 up votes, but I'll have to knock 2 back off for the scummer bit. still, two up.

I apologise for my assistant's behaviour, Ulla. Rest assured, in the privacy of my office he will be made to feel the full force of my pimp hand.

You don't clean your toilet? My impression of you as some kind of neckbeard gets further cemented every day.

Its called human nature, people are what they are, if you don't like the way they behave stay away. I have worked in the building trade for 50 years you meet some good guy's go out and have a beer with them give the toss pots amiss.

It seems to me you're not describing true tolerance there, but a simple choice between remaining true to yourself, or being bought by someone else - which isn't really a choice unless you're utterly desperate because in an invidious position such as needing the dosh to feed your kids or keep the roof over your head, e.g.

True tolerance seems to me to be something like accepting perfectly decent people who you fundamentally disagree with over something such as politics or religion. No doubt there are other examples out there in relation to other kinds of tolerance.
