Best Lower League Signing? 14:12 - May 31 with 7446 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Looking forward to seeing who Paul Hurst goes in for. Got me thinking that we have made some cracking signings from the lower leagues in the past.

I think my favorite lower league signing of all time has to be Matt Holland. I remember when we signed him I thought.... who the hell is he.... that's a lot of money!! Turned out to be money well spent.

Simon Milton would be up there too.

Who would be your nomination?

(I'm not basing this on financial return, as I realise Mings would win that!!)

Sam Parkin. Until he actually got on the pitch that is. On the face of it he was a great signing. It's almost like Swindon took the money and sent us an impostor.

Pronouns: He/Him/His. "Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."

Jon Walters

I remember the moaning and whining on here the day we signed him. Not good enough etc etc.

Or that he might have been a jolly good footballer that couldn't head the ball.

We have a track record for signing tall strikers and lumping the ball up to them and wondering why they are not the same player they were before.

Whoever Hurst signs, I hope he sees their style of play and strengths and ensures it is utilised to its maximum and fits in well with those who are already here (and, of course, that it becomes much more attractive football all round).

The same posters were still moaning when we sold him, insisting he'd never be good enough for the Premiership. He did alright as far as I recall :)

We signed him from Bury who were in our league at the time, weren't they?

Good shout.

I liked the fact that it was our players who recommended him to the manager as he was so hard to play against.

...bit like the way Utd signed Ronaldo...

We played Chester in the FA Cup and Alex Bruce said he was a handful over the 2 games?

Really our most successful players over the past 10 years have been lower league signings, Mings, Cresswell, Bart, Walters - Hurst has to be looking at this with his knowledge of the English lower leagues.

I forgot that Bart was a lower league signing!

What a signing that was.

True. I was trying to think back to Burley's time as manager and it is surprising how few players he got in from the lower leagues who went on to establish themselves. Holland is about the only one I can think of.

Were Crewe in our league when he signed Jermaine Wright?

I guess he did well with youth players, signings from abroad (Tarricco, Wilnis, Reuser) and a few older players dropping down (Magic, Mogga)

Steve Palmer.

If I have remembered this correctly he came to us from Cambridge university, put in a useful stint on the pitch and used his computing degree to write ticketing software for the club. What a bargain.

I used to use the Cambridge into as a bit of trivia.

Never thought he was that useful for us, but did well for Watford.
