Who was Town's first black player? 14:46 - Jun 1 with 6166 viewsbrazil1982

Speaking with my Dad last week who has followed us since the 60s, he couldn't think who our first black player was.

Anyone? I've no idea at all.

The first I can remember watching were Atkinson and Zondervan, but can't believe it was either of those two? That was what? Mid 80's?

Edit: well there you go, LL puts someone a LOT earlier.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Also him who came up with the nickname 'Marty' for Bobby Robson, I was told by one of his contemporaries, due to his bulging eyes when giving the squad a rollocking.

You can vote for whoever you want but the answer is still Steve Stacey.

Pretty certain this is right - I knew Johnny's sons and am sure he has always been referred to as Town's first black player - really nice guy - passed away a couple of years ago

According to"Men Who Made the Town", you're correct. Steve Stacey in Sept '68 and Johnny Miller in Mar '69.

Thing is I doubt any of us remember Steve Stacey playing or ever really being mentioned in reports. Whereas Johnny Miller made over 50 appearances and had a much bigger profile. I remember his picture in the EADT etc at the time. Don’t remember a word about Stacey - in fact I can’t say I’d heard of h8m until a few days ago.

We signed him from Wrexham, if I recall correctly. He didnt' set the world alight and don't think he played that many games for us - but I'm sure he was the first. Johnny Miller might of course have been in the youth team when Stacey was signed - but hadn't made his debut?

Johnny Miller?

Johnny Millers nickname was "Jungle Boy".
The north stand - where I stood - did the monkey "oo,oo,oo".
I was 15. I just joined in the casual racism thinking it was OK.

I know better now.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I saw his debut, when iirc he got injured (if it wasn’t his debut then it wasn’t many games in) and he never really recovered.

Sound right. Wiki says he only made 3 first team appearances.

Jungle boy was Ray Crawfords nickname, arising from his Army service.

I recall reading in the Star that we had signed a "colourful player" and thinking that they'd made a mistake in their reaching for the term of the day.

I remember Steve Stacey quite clearly.

He was tall and rangy, played wing half - much like the sort of position Matt Holland had. He was injured badly in something like his third game, I seem to remember it happened somewhere near the dugouts, right in front of me. I think that he never payed again for Town.

That would be Marty Feldman.

I remember Johnny Miller. He was pretty good and I think I remember people talking about him possibly becoming England's first black player. He wasn't of course.

I don't remember Steve Stacey at all.
