Audi problems... 09:05 - Jun 19 with 10690 viewsTIB

Took my S3 in yesterday after 4 months of ownership as every now and then when I shift in manual it makes a clunking noise (S Tronic box). Took a mechanic out to try and show him but explained the issue happened only occasionally...we pull out of the dealership and it does it straight away. I left the car with them all day yesterday and went back last night thinking they'd have an answer...but no.

"Mr TIB we've run all the diagnostic tests on the car and cannot find any faults with it. We recommend you keeping driving the car to develop the problem further at which point we will be in a better position to fix it".

Has anyone ever had such advice from a dealership? Couldn't believe it and said I'd be bringing it back in 2 weeks and would like them to look again which they've agreed but still, I expected a better response to the issue than basically keep driving your faulty car until it's totally f**ked.

Car is under a year old and 7k miles on it. Would be interested to know if anyone else has had issues with the S Tronic box (I'm assuming its a gearbox issue).

I'd get it back in and make them solve it - its still under warrranty, and if it 'goes' then its a massive bill (I've heard 12K for a new s-tronic gearbox).

What did the engineer say about the noise when you did it? Did he acknowledge the fault?

£12k! Blimey. Remind me to change mine when it's out of warrantee!

Not had any problems so far but only had mine for a few months.

Yeah he acknowledged it but did look confused, as if to say "what was that". He asked me to try and get it to do it again and it wouldn't...it's so intermittent. I reckon it's done it about 8-10 times now.

Not a cheap job at all and I emphasised that it's an issue now and I'm also worried about the long term damage it could be doing. The guy that booked the car in did say the only way they can really solve this is for mechanics to drive around with diagnostics hooked up and try and get the car to do the fault. I asked why they didn't do that yesterday but he just said the issue is that intermittent it could take them all day. Pretty shoddy service, would have expected far better.

This is the norm now isn't it? Not many garages have quality technicians just computer jockeys who read the screen. I had a number of problems with my Discovery, the best advice I got from the dealer's 'Service manager' was how to read the oil level on the dip stick.
Maybe you shpuld get it in writing from they to - drive to destruction or similar- or find a real Audi technical shop where they have real time expereince -
you could always holiday near the factory and leave it with them to resolve?

JCT600 at Lincoln. I'll be contacting them today to put in writing their advice from yesterday. I've also got emails from a few weeks after I purchased the car where I raised the issue and was told it was ok.

I think you're on to something if the fault was heard by the technician. They surely can't deny a request for them to re-look at it now it's been heard?

Your warrantee should be for any Audi main dealer too - you could try finding another one as they do vary considerably in quality. But then one of their technicians wouldn't have heard the fault, so you could be back to square one.

I'd go back and say that they've heard/acknowledged their's something not right and you'd like them to investigate until they find what the problem is. You shouldn't have to put up with it just because it's intermittent.

Keep a log/diary of what happened, where and when. I fell out with Audi many years ago with similar issues (in the Ipswich area), very unhelpful and landed me with unexpected bills and costs. Audi direct were quite fair and on a colleagues car even made goodwill payments for a car out of warranty.

I no long buy Audi's. Sorry Gav/Phil

Are JCT a real dealer or just a sales outlet?

As advised by others go direct to Audi.

I'm not a car mechanic, and I'm certainly not disputing that this sounds bad, but intermittent problems, be they electrical, mechanical, medical or anything else are notoriously difficult to diagnose. ie, the problem cannot be fixed if the problem cannot be found!
Especially fleeting problems that occur so infrequently that it could take ages for the next one to come around.
However, it seems that in this case the fault has been identified as due to a specific component, and as the vehicle is under warranty and the supplier has acknowledged the presence of the fault I think they should replace the gearbox and let the manufacturer study the faulty one in their own time under controlled conditions.
I have no idea what an S3 is, but it sounds expensive and the seller has a moral and legal responsibility.

JCT are probably the biggest Audi and Merc dealer in the north of england.

They are family run and pretty reputable.

If they are going to fix it under warranty, then it doesnt really matter does it?

If the problem gets worse, then it costs them more to fix it.

If youre not happy, you could always ask to see the head of servicing.

That does not mean they don't put sales above anything else. A friedn of mine had problems with his new Range Rover which Marshalls refused to do anything a about under warranty but a smaller dealer more attuned to service resolved

Do you have another audi dealership that is close and not a JCT branch?

About 10 years ago I bought a VW golf from a dealerhip, 18 months old, ex demo, 126 point check etc.

On the way home (c.100 miles as I had sourced it on the internet) it started to veer to one side.

I took it to a VW dealership for them to look at and they condemned the car, they said it had been in an accident and shouldnt be on the road.

They were pretty straight with me and didnt try to cover up for the other dealer.

Exactly this.

I doubt going to Audi will help.

Basically you have an issue that isnt evident most of the time, and the mechanic hasnt witnessed any of the symptoms.

The diagnostics arent showing anything up.

What else could they do apart from stripping the car down?

I dont think the dealer has done anything wrong.

If he took it to a real Audi garage instead of a selling dealer the problems may be unearthed.
Audi may help. A number of problems aith my wifes Subaru were said by the dealer not to be covered by warranty, a call to Subaru UK had the problems all resolved under warranty and a slap on the writ for the dealer who, by the way is now an ex Subaru dealer.

They haven't told him to put up with it, they have asked him to bring it back in again in the hope that it will show up on the diagnositcs.

The OP said it had happened 8-10 times now. Hes had the vehicle 4 months.

By a 'real Audi garage' what do you mean?

An independent Audi specialist?

Thats likely to cost him, and possibly invalidate his warranty.

Audi are unlikely to be able to help if the issue hasn't been identified.

The symptoms have been present approximately once a fortnight since he owned the car, its no surprise that its difficult to diagnose.

Cheers for the feedback. I'm going to get in writing what Audi said yesterday and also all the emails I had regarding this issue just after purchase. I'm then going to explore going to Audi directly to get some advice from them. I fully get its difficult to diagnose an intermittent issue but feel like the fact the technician heard/felt the issue and then they've told me to go away makes no sense, especially as I said they could keep the car in as long as need be and they acknowledged the only way to sort this would be for technicians to drive it around until it did the fault.

I didn't say they had, to either of those. Just that he's on good ground given that they've already acknowledged there's something's up, and should worry about going back. Which was what the OP was all about. Something's got lost in translation.
