Are the government really going to increase duty on fuel & booze- after all they said ?

https://news.sky.com/story/fuel-and-alcohol-duty-freeze-to-be-lifted-to-help-fun

Perhaps if they had not been so generous with tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy + stopped generous corporate welfare this would not be necessary

Punish the less than well off is back on the agenda

Again symptomatic of May's weak position. Having to keep rebellious departmental heads (and US Presidents who insist their allies shoulder more of the military cost burden) happy with bribes while not upsetting the Chancellor.

At least this time it's not further cuts to services for the vulnerable.

You do understand that lower corporation tax = more jobs don't you? Surely that is helping the poor?

It isn't just military though is it Guthram?
It's all government departments who have not got enough cash in due to tax cuts
This morning there are claims many schools including tory flag ship academies have very serious building defects the government won't find money for
given that & cuts to the LA funding we are paying a very heavy price for tax cuts

Now I might be wrong here but I seem to recall a certain bus based promise that was meant to pay for this.

Only if the lower taxes constituted bribes to entice foreign-owned manufacturers to come to the UK (with its high cost-base) at all.

For others, such as Starbucks and Amazon, are they going to abandon such a sizeable and generally well-off marketplace? And if they did, would others not fill the hole in the marketplace?

I meant military as one among several, e.g. the NHS. It's a matter of the supposed "Brexit bonus" being spent several times over already.

Certainly for starbucks and the other big coffee houses it would be better if they were replaced by independent local outlets. It's only the big chains that have tax avoidance options.

So why are people making such a fuss about companies leaving the UK because of Brexit, as you point out it won't make any difference because other companies will fill the void

Retailer might still be there but supply chain shrinks and prices go up.

I want it to be low not high. High corporation tax is bad, we want people in work. Taxing the hell out of businesses and the rich to pay for for those out of work will only last a short time before they leave the country. We need people in work

The businesses who are threatening to leave are not selling to the UK market, but are, instead, using it as a gateway to the EU. Or are those with heavily EU-dependent supply chains, which are likely to become non-viable even in a favourable tax environment. Different issue.

I would rather it was reasonable and equitable, so that small businesses are able to compete on a level playing field.

Not looking for punitive taxation, but it has gone too far the other way. We're suffering from the old problem of everybody demanding a high level of services but nobody wanting to pay for them.

The private sector, hampered by poor franchise agreements and the necessity of turning a profit, has all too frequently proven unable to deliver cost-effective solutions while maintaining good service levels. With much job-cutting as a result.

If high corp tax is bad why are there so many companies in countries where tax is higher than the Uk doing so well?
If if low taxation increases high employment why are there so many self employed and people on zero hr contracts?
& why do the ROSCO's who make £Bns in profits employ so few people ?

People choose to be self employed or zero hours to give them flexibility. People also like self employed to dodge income tax but that is another matter.
