Most of the miserable old codgers who bang on about bringing back national service were probably too young to do it when it was abolished in the 1960s. A bit like the war in the sense that people in their 70s take credit for it even though they were still in nappies. |  | | |

Likewise, I'd never return.
While parts of it are fantastic, and I'd certainly advocate going, there isn't enough to do to warrant being pulled back.
It's also very expensive, so next time I'm in South East asia for a while I'd imagine it will get skipped. | | | |

I'm probably the only one on here who did National Service and spent some of it in Singapore. We National Servicemen didn't mind giving up two years of our lives if meant the generations which came after us had secure futures.

In fairness a lot of Nashos served in Korea and in the Kenyan Emergency, some very unpleasant situations and losses. My uncle served in Kenya during the Mau-Mau Insurgency and my father served in Germany patrolling Berlin where it could get a little hairy in the 1950/60's. [Post edited 16 Jul 2018 20:54]
