It's quite astounding that we've only ever broken our record nine times in my lifetime, and two of those were for Linighan and Gayle.

Incredibly, we've never broken our transfer record in my lifetime, when I'd wager almost every other club in the 92 has.

I survived Ipswich 0-0 Burton

If only.

Although Sheffield United paid something like £850k for him and then he did this (watch from 3 mins):

Yes. I for one didn't rate him.

Linighan was great when he first arrived, promotion winning captain signed from? Was it Shrewsbury?

Yes, that's right on Linighan.

He was a solid defender but never quite as good after his cruciate injury slowed him down too much.

With Vinnie Jones and Danny Dyer.

Scored a decent goal too.

That £94k spent on Jimmy Robertson and Frank Clarke largely preserved our top division place in 1970 so that was money well spent both short term and what it led to in future years.

Bit harsh on Linighan, promotion winning captain, and part of initial team in Prem League, just went downhill then. Certainly a better servant to the club than at least 2 of the others who broke the record subsequently
