Broad's batting isn't good, but his bowling can be outstanding - particularly at the next venue of Trent Bridge.

I don't think he's been that bad. He did take 4 wickets in the 2nd Innings at Lords after all. He's been outperformed by Anderson (obviously) and Curran was more effective at Edgbaston, but that doesn't mean he's playing poorly, just he should perhaps be 3rd choice seam or changed sooner depending on the conditions. He's still producing some good spells of pace bowling (up to 88mph this series.. quicker than he's been for a while) and has been very effective in the 2nd innings.

Hes much quicker than Curran, which makes him a better opening prospect. Curran seems to be a good first change, so long as there is some swing. Woakes offers much the same.

It's an easy answer blaming Broad, even in the first innings last Friday he was still a threat to India despite a few too many balls that didn't make the batsman play.

I'd almost be tempted to say Rashid. That would leave us without a specialist spinner, but he's only bowled 12 overs in the series, taking 3 wickets (Kohli on 149 plus 2 tail-enders) and scored 29 runs. Curran has bowled 38 overs, taking 6 wickets and scored 127 runs (including a match-saving 63).

Indeed. Pointless having him in very seam and swing friendly conditions. Different if it looks hot and dry. But in that case, perhaps Moeen might be a better bet anyway. Played well so far this season, and clearly more of a batsman which isnt a bad thing in a team full of all rounders.

the thing people always forget with bowlers stats, is Jimmy doesnt take 5 wickets, if the bowler at the other end, ie Broad, is just letting the batting team relax and score easy runs, its about building pressure at both ends, passing the bat, so that Jimmy can do his variations and not worry about the scoreboard racing away. Stokes is only being picked for the batting/all rounder role, probably add a quick 50 to a score, which Curran isnt quite as reliable to do yet, so drop an under performing batter, not a bowler to accomodate him.

Completely agree. Given how India have struggled against swing bowling this summer, I would go with Stokes and Curran and rest Rashid.

Woakes was clear Man of the Match in the Second Test, both Stokes and Curran had a very good First Test... Unless you drop Jennings and open with Woakes (creek g a bowler space) or open with Moeen Ali allowing Stokes to take Rashid's place, or, to be really controversial, open with Ali and Woakes, on the grounds that they can't do worse than the openers for the last 4 or 5 series, add Stokes' and leave the rest of the team unchanged. Much as I despise Anderson and Broad as an opening attack in Australia, in English conditions they are the first choice new ball pairing.

To add: bringing in Stokes for Curran now, while Curran is successful, means that he isn't dropped, but replaced by a senior player. Waiting until he has a bad game and then bringing Stokes back is worse, as he would be going out on a low. This way Curran is the next cab on the rank should any of our pace bowlers get injured, and is successful, hungry and ready to go.
