The NHS is at breaking point. It's the single biggest challenge the UK faces right now IMO, appropriately funding and operating it.

We need a number of reforms to the NHS. It gets a lot of talk but no action.

Sadly I think the government seem to be more interested in how their friends can make money out of public services. I was reading today in Private Eye about how National Rail is being made to sell much of its commercial property portfolio. Whilst this will be a nice little earner for whoever takes it on, it will deprive NR of a large revenue stream, meaning higher costs to passengers in the long run.

I also saw recently that a council in the south west was selling off its county farms to cover running costs. I thought this was illegal (David Cameron was upbraided after suggesting it to his local council), but apparently George Osborne changed the rules to allow it in 2015.

It's not just the government that does this - Debenhams, Southern Cross etc all suffered after following the sale & leaseback method.

This short-termism and profit above all else ideology is slowly killing the country IMO.

Since the referendum this government have been consumed by Brexit.
Everything else has been shoved aside.
They only decide to do something when a disaster happens like Grenfell.
Grenfell has now been put to one side because the inquiry is dealing with that and no comment or action is needed until the enquiry presents its findings.
According to the Tories the NHS is better funded than it has ever been and they have announced numerous cash injections although many of these have been money moved from other NHS budgets and no substantial new money has been given to the NHS just promises for the future.
There are many issues that Labour could use to pressure the government to get their act together but they choose not to. I just don't get why this Labour opposition is so quiet and giving the Tories an easy time. Labour of the past would have been all over them like a rash banging on about how poorly the Tories are dealing with non-Brexit issues and making sure that the voters know who not to vote for next time.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I agree with your point around the allocation of time and resource. The saddest thing about Brexit is the fact it's occupied so much of the time of our supposed leaders and resources from the public pot over the past 2 years, it's criminal really. That said, I would argue the NHS has been up the sh1tter long before June 2016.

It was well funded right up to 2008 and then the financial crash happened.
Since then its been on tick over, exasperated by the Tories obsession of using temporary agency staff to fill roles because they tend to be non-union and don't get a pension. This has increased the short term costs but in 20/30 years they'll have fewer pensions to provide but that doesn't help the NHS in 2018.
So yes, Its been up the sh1tter for a long time.

What’s mind-boggling is that they will find the money to give to drug abusers and people to play computer games, then not have the money to help a poor sick child. The NHS is just broken!

That side of Manchester is particularly stretched in terms of resources, and there have been a few scandals in recent years in Tameside/Stockport hospitals.

Luckily I've only had to take my boy in twice, and as he's only 9 months now they saw him quickly and were fantastic. Especially when it came to keeping him and mum in etc. getting specialists up to see him and whatnot.

I know that story was 2 years ago, but I'm not surprised. Some people are so selfish and ignorant they go to A and E for the most minor of things, rather than pay for simple and cheap things at a pharmacy. The political aspect of this, probably isn't worth antagonising certain people over, but it's very clear where this government stands on exploiting the NHS and the public to me.

I read that and think back to the nights in there and it makes you appreciate what a job those NHS workers do and why it's so tragic when they fail like this. It's one of many facets of public services and life that makes me think this country has stagnated and even gone backwards for a long time now.

I'm a paid up member of the Labour Party and it's sad to see the party consuming itself over this anti-semitism row when there's a real need for an opposition party to challenge this train wreck of a government who are going to throw off a cliff. I didn't sign up for this sh*t. You never hear any real vision from the party, if they came up with some real solution of how they would do this and this differently and lead the country in a different way that you could be behind and proud of, the current government is a complete fractious mess but they have no realistic oppostion.

Jeez.
As a country we seem to be apathetic to the problems we're facing. Strange feelings going on and stories like this just prove we're in a really bad way.

I think they do have policies and a vision (some of the stuff in the last manifesto went down pretty well), but they're just not able to put it across because they're having to spend the whole time responding to the latest accusations against Corbyn.

I’m not a paid up member, and can’t ever recall voting for them, but share your frustration. We desperately need a functioning opposition to be the screws on this bunch of @holes. They wrecking everything they touch.
