Bury St Edmunds eatery advice please 16:52 - Sep 9 with 5376 viewshoppy

Despite having lived there for ages, it was some time ago now, so not so familiar with the up to date restaurant/pub ratings. Does anyone have any recommendations of decent ones please - nothing too pompous or pretentious, just some really good pub food or perhaps Chinese?

Thanks.

The One Bull pub is very good if you want something not too fussy and in a relaxed environment.

if you want something a bit more special then 1921 is excellent.

You mention Chinese, Mings is supposed to be quite good but I haven't tried it yet so not a recommendation. I think it's a bit more than the usual fare price wise but that's easily checked isn't it.

What about good old Zen? Assume that's still going. Good to just turn up and eat kinda place. You wouldn't spend hours there.

Choice of Chinese restaurants is very limited. Mings is the only one I'd recommend.
There's a few decent places if you fancy Indian. Valley Connection (VC) on Churchgate Street is decent. Old Cannon Brewery, pub food menu but done really well. Bonus that they brew some tasty beers on site.

Zen along Angel Street was very nice when Mrs Pinewood & i last had a meal in Bury.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I'd go Old Cannon based on your criteria. Decent food, nice beer and good value.

Tell them TractorWood sent you. They won't know what it means though.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I've been in the Old Cannon before, but only for beer, never eaten. We're going to be in Hatter Street later on though, so that might go against it in being a bit of a walk.
I'll give it a look on the food front though.

Ben's is the other option I would recommend. Bit closer for you then.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Locally butchered chops, pies and hearty food. Really good value.

Think the guy went to Thurston school and has some butchering experience.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Ben has just reopened the Queens Head pub (a few doors down) as a bar and grill. Heard it's good but haven't been yet.

Sounds interesting... and good proximity for where else we'd be going. Would it need to be booked you think?

You'd think it would be ok on a Sunday evening.

As you posted an hour and half ago, how did it go?

Hmm. Would be a good name for an eatery though you have to admit.

What's Pea Porridge like nowadays I wonder. If just you and the missus, might be worth a look?

The Queens revamped sounds ok though, and in the past the Angel Hill has usually thrown up the odd decent, non- stupidly priced, quality restaurant. Dunno what's there atm.
