At this point it is 3 v 2 - Chalobah has to go to the ball or that man is 1 vs 1, Nolan has to drop to Besic, instead he goes for wrong man and leaves besic totally open.
If he drops to Besic, ball goes to 22 who has to do something special to get away and allows us time to regroup | |

I think the press is ok until Nolan loses the line, Jackson probably needed to drop in once Skuse went past him but it worries me that Nolan gets it so wrong when he is a player that was part of the high press last year that brought hurst his success.

They turned it on for 5-10 minutes in the second half and created 3 better chances than we had all game - Ayala header off the line, Hugill miscued header, Hugill shot just wide, Friend cutting in and smashing shot across.

Through my footy coaching with the lads, we use the phrase 'deal with the now not the future' which gets shortened to 'deal with the now'.
Effectively, we're simply asking the lads to deal with the striker bearing down on goal and forget about the lad outside for the time being. It's entry level coaching stuff but if someone switches off... | |

As a philosophy and an approach i like what Hurst is trying to install here and the patches where you see it working, its really decent to watch. However, when the basics aren't done properly, its atrocious.
The positive is that basics are easy to fix. The negative is that we're 11 games in and we're making them, frequently. Time to go back to a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 for me. Back to basics for a bit starting Saturday to get some points on the board. | |

Pressing properly is literally the easiest thing in football.
1 player closes the guy on the ball down
Other players support this by shutting off options of a short pass
Player on the ball either gets dispossessed/plays a team into trouble/hoofs it long
All 3 of those options for the player on the ball result in giving you a chance to turn possession.
Pressing isn’t 3 men all trying to get the ball back, you’ll get cut open as we did last night. |  |
