It comes from the Dutch game 'kolf'. Documents in the British Museum suggest that the Dutch were selling 'kolf'-balls at St. Andrews as early as the 12th century. 'Putting' comes from the Dutch word 'put' meaning 'hole' or 'well'.

No. Mary Queen of Scots was a notable early patron of the sport.

You can't have a golfer if golf is yet been invented.

What if the game had been invented but there was no name for it though?

Perhaps those who first played the game were so bad that it inspired the coinage of the play on words 'gofer'. You know, forever having to collect the ball from where it had strayed from the course.

Maybe the players got fed up of being confused with some small furry rodent so changed the phonetics a bit to make a unique word describing the people who partook in the 'long stick hitting ball at holes' game.

It's not difficult to see how this may have then become shortened to create the name 'golf'.

In fact, I'm fairly confident this is exactly how it panned out.

But regardless of this argument Farage had already been ‘invented’ then?

Easily confused. Both are very dense and need to be radically pruned.
