That England team that just beat Spain 22:28 - Oct 15 with 2950 views | Melford | According to the Guardian report, was the youngest since 1959. Average player age was just over 23 and the only player over 25 was Trippier. We have a goldmine of youth coming through, we picked a squad full of kids who took 4 points from Croatia and Spain away.

We appear to have created a camp that all of the players want to be at, with genuine competition for places and youth players (with experience throughout the age groups for England) ready to step up and fill voids. The whole thing just seems better organised, better planned and genuinely enjoyable to watch. Long may it continue.

There's a lot of promise there If we can develop a midfield which can begin to control the tempo of games then we could go far

The thing is so we want to do that? The point was made that copying everyone hasn't got us that far and controlling the tempo is what teams like Spain do. Incisive counter-attacking and a press did them completely on the first half. Maybe a midfield that can deliver the piercing ball is more important than one that controls the tempo, let's the opposition regroup and nullifies all our pace upfront. SB

Yes, I'd say we do. Really good teams (national or league) control the pace of games. Generally, they are able to sit on the ball and slow the game down and then, when needed, have spells of intense pressure. So, in effect you are both right. We want to be able to control the tempo from a midfield perspective but be incisive, counter-attacking and high press at key times.

We definitely need to, as otherwise we end up being overrun like we were through 2nd half - and the change to 3 at the back didn't help with that at all. You need someone to put their foot on the ball and begin to wrestle back control, similar to how Michael Carrick did for clubs he played for. Harry Winks looked a good player. I think it showed up Jordan Henderson a bit really - for how good he is off the ball he is just so sloppy on it and you can't afford that when you need to be quick and incisive on the break

You do need both aspects to your game IMO. Not every team will enable us to counter on them like Spain did last night.

Valid points but it's been proven time and again that we don't do well when trying to copy what works for others. For instance, the Dutch team that finished 3rd in the World Cup a few years back didn't play that way, they were incisive on the counter and punished teams in behind. Football can be played many ways. Certainly a midfield who can do that would be nice and with players like Winks and Fodan it could happen. We don't have players ready to do that at the moment though unfortunately so developing a counter-attacking game would seem a better bet. Happy to be proven wrong though. SB

That England team that just beat Spain on 17:51 - Oct 16 with 2004 views | vilanovablue | I think Southgate has worked out that a plan based on available players is the way forward. It's amazing how many England managers have ignored this. I thought in the second half we stopped Spain playing, they spent an age passing the ball in front of our defence which is actually good control. Plus Al Stewart for all the musos out there 😂
