Here's a bit of irony. Gilbert and George moved into their house on Fournier Street the year these pictures were taken. At the time they said: "Nothing happens in the world that doesn't happen in the East End." Now the area is fully gentrified and has one of the largest populations of artists anywhere in the world. There is now far less of the excitement and culture that Gilbert and George loved of the area thanks, in part, to the gentrification which they were a part of. I do like G&G and even met them once when walking around that area. More a point at how boring and soulless many parts of London have become in recent years. [Post edited 17 Oct 2018 14:33]

Yes, it's been through various phases. Fournier Street and various other Spitalfields roads were originally classy areas, lived in by wealthy silk industry bosses.

Yep. Much to the surprise of Nigel Farage supporters, I'm sure, we had immigration even before being in the EU. And non Europeans too! [Post edited 17 Oct 2018 18:18]

George designs clothes for Asda, which is a big step up from when he was on tv with Geoffrey, with someone's hand up his arris.

Yes indeed and before that the Huguenots - expert silk weavers fleeing Catholic persecution in France - and then large quantities of Irish.

We did up until Labour introduced the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968 as a knee jerk reaction to the Dockers Union marching in support of Enoch Powell.
