Kepler is dead on 12:19 - Oct 31 with 945 views | BullardsMagicMullet | Shame it just ran out of cooling juice, also the Mars Opportunity rover is not responding due to the recent massive dust storm. Can't wait but 2021 isn't that far away, looking forward to seeing what it can find. Amazing that it's infrared capabilities are expected to let it see back in time to the first galaxies forming just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Wonder if life on Mars will be confirmed by then?

Let's hope it goes up in 2021, it's already been delayed for 3 years. Perhaps most exciting is that it should be able to directly image exoplanets which allows one to use spectroscopy to analyse the atmosphere directly and look for life indicating factors such as methane. Kepler is dead on 14:36 - Oct 31 with 862 views | MJallday | if they ever get round to launching the James Webb, then that will truely be remarkable. whod have thought a big digital camera would cost that much. cant we give the job to that musky bloke? he lobbed a car up there last year. how hard can it be?

That is actually one of the issues. When it was designed there was no launch system capable of carrying such a large mirror so it had to be foldable which is a more difficult design to produce and align. Since the Falcon 9 Heavy launch, SpaceX could actually put a design with a single piece non-foldable mirror into orbit given they have a lot more launch capacity now. Can't roll back and redesign though, would cost a fortune and be even more delayed. SB
