Old money - withdrawn UK banknotes 14:26 - Nov 8 with 3001 viewsSteve_M

The Bank of England website has pictures of various old banknotes. Kind of interesting* so thought I would share.

*More interesting than filling in the form to exchange some withdrawn money I forgot about anyway.

Interesting

So there was a £1000 note back in the 18th century - seems a bit odd.

Was their some massive revaluation at some point? Otherwise it would be worth about a quarter of a million now.

Maybe Facters can remember.

On a similar note does anyone know if charities accept old notes?

I have had a google and it seems they did last year but there's nothing about this year. Just wondered if another year on they could still take them. I was going to start a thread but some idiot would consider it virtue signalling despite the fact it's only one fiver.

The highest denomination notes were removed from circulation in WW2 to prevent forgery (let's not forget the overwhelming ethos of the Blitz, particularly in the good old East End, was crime, or that the prisons were emptied in 1939 of all those with only short periods to serve).

There are £1m and £100m notes produced, but only used for accounting purposes within the Bank of England.

Looks like Victoria, Edward VII and George VI never had his portrait on a note. The only two who have are George V and the current Queen, although she had to wait until she had been Queen for 8 years,

Charities would be mugs not to accept old bank notes as they can still be redeemed for face value through the Bank of England. I did this with some old notes that I found in my late father in law's stuff & the process was fairly simple.

Peter Cook as George Spiggott in "Bedazzled" (1967) had a million pound note on him, but nothing else.

It's really annoying when that happens.

Great moment in Ambulance the other night. A bloke rang the 999 from a petrol station. His petrol came to £30.03. He said he couldn't pay the odd 3p. He'd got at least £40, but didn't see why he should break a tenner for 3p.

Clearly a farmer.

Yes, so poor Dudley Moore, as the "loser" had to find the sixpence for the ice cream which Spiggott had promised him. I felt sorry for Dudley Moore.

During WW2 Jerry dropped millions in counterfeit white fivers to try to disable our fragile economy.
Funnily enough these are sought after by collectors.

I think some of those notes were made by Jewish forgers who got special treatment in Auschwitz.
There was quite a good German language film about it a few years ago called "Counterfeiters"

Might be worth seeing what you can get for it online or from a dealer - old still-redeemable currency tends to go for more than face value amongst the collecting community.

I'd imagine the charity might only redeem it with the bank, whereas by selling it privately you might be able to get, say, £10 for your fiver, which you can then donate.
