Urgent laptop advice - Dan, anyone? 09:23 - Nov 26 with 4513 viewsLord_Lucan

Woke up to a black screen of death and laptop has been dropped off at repair place - but in the event that it is RIP I will need something quick to get back up and going again as I cannot work without it. I hate PC world etc but may have to use them for a quick fix - all options though remain open.

Use is work only - non gaming. MS work and internet stuff. Don’t usually spend more than £500

Thanks in advance - desperate.

I was looking at some "cost effective" options from both Argos & Currys recently.

They are all set up for streaming stuff and not actually saving stuff to the device - decent processing speed but feck all HDD capacity. Best to look t the next tier up, I reckon.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8630575?CMPID=BPLA01&_$ja=tsid:72555|acid:380022

There's also an option to sign up to Office 365 with this laptop too.

Also, treat yourself to an external HDD drive and back up your important stuff to that.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Something like this?

Or if you need a PC World one (and you have to get it quick)
https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-3000-1

PC World one is actually a pretty good deal.

I already have Office and I already have backblaze backup so all is good there.

Edit- I would never buy an HP product.

Maybe the Dell one will be the one if needed - just awaiting a call from Nerd HQ, I notice that the former suggestion can deliver by tomorrow as well so out of the two.........?

Need 17” though.

Thanks for input.

Interesting comment about HP.

I have only every hard 2 HP latops and neither has ever given me a moments concern. Both lasted well over 6 years each.

Was given funds to go an source a work laptop myself and again went for HP.

It can be a bit pot luck with them. The internals for the most part are good but the build quality tends to be cheap.

I've got a couple of Windows 7 professional laptops off ebay (refurbed) but fine.
hightech-gb is the seller I've used.(but there are others.)They are like new.
Most brands are available.Expect to pay £60 to £80 delivered.
Not rocket science but have got me out of the brown stuff a few times.

To instigate an argument with a nerd online, really.

Thanks all - thankfully all is well and repaired.

The brilliant Nerds at EasyPC on Foxhall Road roundabout have fixed it - so here is a shameless plug for them as they always come up trumps with any problems I have.

They have a pretty full spectrum of cheap and nasty through to solidly built stuff.

I have brought two refurbished HP elitebooks and the build quality of those it decent, being refurbished they were cheap as chips too. Not had any problems with either and am much happier with these than the similarly priced but new low end stuff I have had in the past.

Agree about the HP product, had one and it was nothing but a pain in the rear. All sorts of viruses, pop-ups and issues.

Bought step-daughter one of the Google Chrome Books and that behaved really well.

Would blow your budget but I def favour the MAC, had my MacBook Pro for nearly 7 years now and still performing well. Cue the kiss of death!
