Something that is free, easy, simple and will have an immediate positive impact?
Something that will help employment, help enrich our culture, and maybe make you a better more informed person?
Then, if you don't have one already, go to your local library and get a library card. Take a book out. That's literally it. You don't even have to read the book although it would be cool if you would. Then in a month or so take it back and get another one. Etc. They also do DVDs if that works better for you, and CDs.
Public libraries are being threatened with closure all over the country as a result of austerity, but also part of the reason they are being shut is lack of demand. Do we want to live in a country without libraries? Even if you dont use them or havent for years I bet you can see that no, we don't.

Closures don't always come quickly. Smiled at this story a week or so ago about a staffed library that had no books taken out in a whole year. Well some were checked out.....but only by bored staff checking the equipment still worked....

Most definitely. They can also be a great resource for recent immigrants, as well as both the youth and the elderly. At my local library, should I wish, not only can I borrow books, I can sign up for free guidance sessions on how to file my taxes, take free basic English speaking lessons, prepare for citizenship exams, or take my kids (not that I have any) to a free story hour read by local drag queens.

Well, yes, if libraries are just about borrowing books then there's no need for bricks and mortar sites. But there's a huge gap they can fill in terms of offering community and semi-formal education offerings.
Like anything that helps the disenfranchised though, they have had their funding utterly destroyed. | |

Can't we have both? Libraries are highly valuable public spaces used by some of the poorest most disadvantaged people in the country, and the youngest and oldest.

This is the thing with austerity - if you are financially OK and don't need support from the state for anything then it could be seen as a good thing as you benefit from lower taxes etc and don't need the services being cut.
However, the minute the wheels fall off, you lose your job, or become ill, or have a child who needs help, then you are royally fooked. | |

I read sh!tloads of books and I always used to frequent Melford library as a kid, I used to order load of books and music in which you could do for free. But the thing is, before I left for university I look a library book by mistake in the little pile of books I was taking up with me. I still have it now, it was about the Vikings. I'm worried that if I go in there they'll find my details on the computer and fine me for a book that is 21 years overdue. |  |

Run properly, libraries can become fantastic community hubs, places where people of all ages go to socialise. The books help to make it a nice environment, and can provide a focus, but the days of them being the sole raison d’etre are no more.
One of the villages near me still has a library and it is constant use. During the day young mothers and the elderly use it whilst in the early evening it’s populated by school age kids and their parents.
These are vital resources and we’ll only realise just how fantastic they were when they’re gone.

Don't think people realise what a good library can do. Thirty years ago my daughter, as part of her studies, gave her love library a list of two books on Motzart and asked if they could get them. It took three weeks but they got them for her from a Library in Vienna. They were both priceless and in poor condition. One so delapidated that they apologized for it only bring available in microfiber format, which allowed her to keep.

Essex are planning on closing many small regional libraries and reducing hours and services in many others. Like so many other things about our fine old country, as you rightly say, we will miss them when they're gone.

What you suggest could be immensely harmful and cost lives. Local authorities have been scandalously starved of funds and can no longer provide essential services. Something that has become outdated and underused, maybe even unnecessary such as a local library used by very few might actually be a lot less important than housing, food - or maybe care in the community. So rather than waste time at a library you don't really want go litter picking or volunteer in a food bank | |
