Line up today - Bishop a MUST 10:19 - Dec 15 with 2187 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

Massive game. Even bigger considering Wigan have a few absent with injuries, the main one being Nick Powell.

If I’m Lambert, I’m taking a couple of risks today hoping they pay off - not out of desperation or anything, but more taking the game to the maximum against a Wigan side who have a terrible away record and are there to be taken.

My line up:
Gerken
Spence Chambers Pennington Knudsen
Bishop Chalobah Nolan
Lankester Harrison Sears

I know it’s a big ask to throw Bishop in from the start, and to ask Lankester to go again from the start for the second game running, but they’re two players who have something in their locker to take the game to Wigan and make something happen in the danger areas of the pitch. Creativity/directness with a no fear factor I like to see it as.

It’s harsh on Downes and Roberts to be dropped, but the opportunity presented today, at home, to a team struggling for form home & away, is one that we can’t afford to let slip. Having a couple more creative players on the pitch and taking a couple of risks is needed, and if it pays off, there’s something to work with going into a busy few weeks.

Harrison for Roberts yes, if the former is fit enough. Also Lankester.

But why remove one of our better players recently - Downes?

And why play Nolan at all.

Harrison for me too, if he can give us 60 minutes then put Roberts on. Lankester to start, he's a young lad, wants to play and has that enthusiasm of youth. Believe he offers more than Edwards currently and has that bit of quality, he's a definite starter in my eyes!

He didn't do a bad job in the game at Stoke, to be fair.

Personally I'd have Downes in ahead of Chalobah.

Some experience is needed there.

A young trio of a knackered Bishop, Downes and Chalobah would get destroyed...

Downes ahead of Chalobah for me too.... If we are only having one defensive mid

The team will be. (Not my choice but what I think it will be)
Gerken
Spence Chambo Pennington Knudsen
Downes Chalobah Nolan
Lankester Jackson Sears

, for me I would take out Knudsen for Kenlock .

Wigan have problems at centre back, and there most experienced one has no pace meaning they will sit back deep. Jackson has pace to burn and was only out of the team last week due to illness.
Nolan did ok at Stoke, I think Lambert will want to see more.

I like your thinking, plenty of creativity in there but you remove Downes you take away so much energy in that midfield. Plus Bishop can’t get about the pitch as well as the others at the moment so I find that midfield a tad too luxurious. Downes and Chalobah a must. Wouldn’t be against Nolan as it’s obvious one will replace the other at 60 minutes. And if it’s a stalemate I’d rather Bish come on and give it his all for 30 than bring the less effective Nolan on.
Also while Nick Powell is missing I want someone keeping with Josh Windass. I’d like Downes to be that man.
Expect us to use their left backs suspension to our advantage today so expect plenty of attacks down the right. Ideally Lankester cutting in and Spence overlapping

Don’t get me wrong, I really rate Downes, and performance/consistency wise, him and Pennington have been up there amongst the best for us this season.

I just think with Bishop/Nolan you’ll get more of a final third threat, and in particular with Nolan, more of a goal threat too.

I expect Wigan to sit deep, nothing in behind at all, settle for the point - it’s a must not lose situation for them too, but a point will be something they’ll take.

With Downes, you get someone who’s tenancious, does the nitty gritty work, has energy and gets about the pitch, but I think Downes will be far more important for the new few games where we will see less of the ball.

Agree - experience is needed in there. Too much dependence and reliability on Chalobah too in the deeper role.

Take Chalobah out and you lose height. It’ll only take a set piece for Wigan today if they get something.

They’re a physical side, but we can’t make this game a scrappy one for them where it comes down to winning first/second balls etc...

Downes has more championship experience than Nolan.

Not interested in Nolan's League 1 / 2 experience.

Downes> Nolan

You feel simply swapping Nolan into CM would help!?

Why would any side sit v us? Our defence is as open as a prostitutes legs.

Attack us and it's a far better strategy than sitting.

We haven't kept a single clean sheet all season bar at H v 10 man Bolton.........

Not really swapping when he started last week, is it...?

Edit:- I'd rather play Downes because the kids a natural obviously. But Chalobah seems undroppable to many people for some reason and if we were to start Bishop I can see Downes being the man to make way...

For me:

Gerken
Donacien Chambers Pennington Knudsen
Bishop Downes Dozzell
Lankester Jackson Sears

It won’t happen, but I would like to see us line up with this. Cant see PL going with Donacien ahead of Spence, particularly as he doesn’t see him as a RB but his earlier performances were fairly encouraging at times I thought, certainly more so than Spence. Some midfield creativity in Bishop and Dozzell and a big role for Downes to sit. Not a massive fan of Jackson, his touch is pony, but I do think he’s got a bit more about him in terms of goal threat than Harrison or Roberts.

Poll: Will Boris Johnson be PM this time next week?
