Is it time to herald Mick McCarthy as a football genius ?? on 15:19 - Dec 27 by itfcjoe
We built ourselves to play around him, and had him taking all the set pieces etc - of course we would have missed his goals as our top scorer but any team does. If he wasn’t playing we wouldn’t have played with 10 men, we’d have changed things up.
But perhaps we wouldn't of missed his goals so much if the defence hadn't leaked so many over the season. You know, if they had of got the basics right?
Just a thought.

Clearly this is even worse. But Blue is right in Lawrence, without his goals alone, we'd have been bottom 3 that season - And only 9/10 goals at that?, but what crackers he scored thankfully Obviously that's why you sign players. BUT we were incredibly lucky the injury curse didn't hit at the wrong time with him.
Some crackers there.

But we did have Lawrence and his goals as Mick signed him and got the best out of him
If we didn’t then Mick would have signed someone else, as he did every other season he was here
It’s just a ridiculous non-point

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

We conceded 58 goals that season, a decent enough record.
Less than 3rd place Reading, the same as 5th place Hudds and one more than 6th place Fulham.
Defending, quite clearly, wasn’t our problem that season

Sometimes you need to be hit with the 2.5 minutes of footage to realise how bad certain aspects of our game are.
It's very easy watching a live game, having a few drinks, getting home etc. Win the game 2-1 and you've forgotten all about problems we faced during the game. I think that's the point people are making. Whilst it wasn't as bad as now... we have had defensive issues for a few years, it's not new. But it was suger coated by Bart performances and of course wins under the belt, that goes without saying. But I think it's unfair to say you can't make a judgement based on highlights, when you certainly can if you're watching 2.5 minutes of the opponents hammering at your goal all the way through.
Only Town fans could try to make a virtue of being armchair critics. Unreal.

Nothing is ever that simple, we’d have set up totally differently if he wasn’t in the side
Exactly. Seem to remember (and just checked) that Lawrence had a slow start and his goals really came in during the second half of the season, which wasn't as good as the first half.

Correct and he did set up differently when Lawrence left
The football was then sht and the fans had enough (2017/2018)
My point regarding 2016/2017, Lawrence was the saviour and for Mick and thankfully we had Lawrence otherwise IMO we would have gone down as didn't have good enough alternatives that season.

'Thought' is a bad word to use in or alongside any of your posts, mate.

It’s a total non point, the football was worse in 16/17 than 17/18 anyway.
You make out Mick was lucky Lawrence turned up, he was recruited with a big chunk of the budget used on him. It’s not like he bought a lottery ticket

We scored more goals the season after Lawrence left and, for half the season at least, played much better. Every time you try to debate with the grown ups your lack of knowledge of the club you claim to support gets horribly exposed.

Not at all, I got involved in the discussion as the team overall wasn't great, thankfully we had Lawrence that season, otherwise we'd have been playing in league 1.
That's my point on 2016, it shouldn't be down to 1 player to save a club. Lawrence on his own did. imo and the clubs been suffering from the 1 player issue far too long. Season before Fraser, Last season Waghorn. That's why this season is so painful we don't have anyone.
Be different if most of his goals were teamwork but they weren't either.
But you can't say big chunk of budget was used, because people say Mick didn't get any money remember.

I thought it was down to Bart as well as Lawrence, I’m lost in all this rubbish
Last year Garner, Celina and McG scores about 25-30 between them, one man team?!
Also Fraser played about 15 games so how were we a one man team that season?!
Yet again, your argument is just so easy to pick holes in, almost like you don’t have a clue generally what you are going on about.

Didn't say anything about goals in 2017/2018 Herbz
Said the football was sht as Joe rightly pointed out we had to change things without a flair player like Lawrence in the team which Mick did.

You're doubling down on this?!
It wasn't down to 1 player to save the club ... as has been shown to you. Surprised you didn't mention Celina last season given as he was just as effective as Lawrence (and frustrating too). But ultimately you recognise that there were other players like Waghorn, Garner and McGoldrick who all had as big a role (and that's just in attack).

Garner, Celina, Mcg 23 over the whole season in all competitions. Not a great return imo. and none of them scored in the final 3 months of the season and only 1 of them in 2018 itself.

But Lawrence only started scoring when we were already safe in midtable ...

Waghorn didn’t score for 15 games in a row at one point? So what?

Safe in midtable? we finished 4 points off bottom 3 Darth. Wasn't anywhere near as this season, but it certainly didn't feel safe.
It's easy now to sit back and say, no worries, we weren't close. But even Mick himself said we were in a battle with the bottom clubs so even he could see it was a problem.
