I have £30 in Amazon vouchers so I'm looking to purchase three or four new books.

Books that I've read and enjoyed most recently -

Hunting Evil - Guy Walters
The Hustler - Walter Tevis
The German War - Nicholas Stargardt
1984 - George Orwell
East West Street - Phillipe Sands
Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor E Frankl
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee - Dee Brown
SPQR - Mary Beard

All suggestions most welcome!

If you haven't read any other Orwell, I would highly recommend it as 1984 is, in my opinion, his worst book.

Down and Out in Paris and London, Homage to Catalonia and Keep the Aspidistra Flying are all favourites.

If you enjoyed Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, then try “The Earth is Weeping” by Peter Cuzzons. Same basic topic but challenges Browns viewpoint

How about a bit of historical fiction?

Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies were brilliant if you could get past the first person style. The C J Sansom Shardlake series are great too.

I'm currently reading The Terror about the doomed Arctic expedition of the 19th century, which is incredible, if you don't mind supernatural themes.

Why don’t you like 1984?

Out of interest.

Best book I've read in the last few years is Children of Time by Adrian Chaikovsky.

Next level good sci fi.

Mainly the style, to be honest. I find Orwell at his best doing autobiographical, or semi-autobiographical, stuff. His essays are also very good.

Also not a mad fan of futurism, which is essentially what 1984 is. The message is great but far from subtle. Still, a very important book, just not my bag in terms of what Orwell produced.

And yes, that's the weakest of Dawkins' books I've read. Some of his other stuff is worth reading, probably starting with The Greatest Show on Earth and easy(ish) introduction to evolution. The Blind Watchmaker and Unweaving the Rainbow are good too, if more detailed.

If you like a good autobiography: Stephen Henry’s is very good.

Fiction, I’d recommend the fiction novels by another snooker player: Ronnie O’Sullivan. It’s on book three now and follows a character called Frankie James. Surprisingly good.

I've read that one. It's interesting how countries face many of the same issues today as they did centuries ago based purely on geography.

The Spy and The Traitor by Ben Macintyre.

Half way through it at present, excellent factual book about a KGB agent and his eventual defection to the west.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.
