Trump's Secretary Of State who actually believes in The Rapture, suggested when he was head of the CIA in 2017 that the agency is working to change the elected government of Venezuela.

Oil.
This is a bit of an old stereotype now isn't it? The US is the largest oil producer in the world, they don't need oil from Venezuela. Venezuela is actually 11th and produces less than 20% of what the US produces:
As for Venezuela itself, it's been horribly mismanaged for over 10 years, it's a tragedy. The Russians offering support to a failed government which just won highly dubious elections should rank higher on the naughty things than Trump endorsing the opposition leader.

Should also add that the rest of South America is recognising the opposition leader and none of them are exactly fans of the Trump administration.

Oil.
The US is now exporting oil. Venezuelan crude tends to be heavy anyway, meaning it's not the easiest to refine.
People do need to look beyond lazy stereotypical reactions and at the utter mess Maduro has made of running the country, the voter suppression and subversion of the constitution since the oil price dropped rather than the statements of Trump and Pence.

Jair Bolsonaro has given his support for this "coup" which should send a shudder down the spines of anybody who objects to the views of the far right. There is an axis of hard (far) right consensus forming Trump-Bolsonaro-Pinera which won't be good for the working person or the planet.
One thing which I don't understand is how Sky are supporting Ocean Rescue campaign but banging on about Venezuela and its oil reserves. Economists on the right seem fixated on oil refineries and plastic production.

You're acting like the US hasnt historically meddled in South America for much much less than access to one of the largest oil fields in the world on their doorstep. But you're right of course, the Russians even flew some bombers there recently too.

Hundreds of examples of US 'intervention' in Latin America. Can't have those pesky co-operative farms popping up when the man from Del Monte has cans to fill. They're ideological attacks as much as they are commercial.

Getting Bolsonaro’s approval is not ideal but it doesn’t detract from other countries in the area backing the opposition. Coup is technically correct but a strong term given the elections were clearly nonsense. You don’t think the US position is correct in this instance?
I don’t know enough about the internal economy to say how they can recover. They do need to maximise their oil income and invest wisely with the proceeds, something they haven’t done in more than a decade. You surely acknowledge the mismanagement of the past two socialist governments has created the mess they are in at the moment?
My friends, friend mother lives in Venezuela and she hasn’t been able to get the medicine she needs for a while. They managed to get some to her from abroad but there is no supply within the country. It’s a total mess and to carry on with the current government on the basis of a highly dubious election isn’t going to work for Venezuela.

I don't think citing obvious historical errors in order to take a stance on an existing and hugely significant issue is the way forward though.

I see Russia has attacked the US and Canadas support for the Venezuelan opposition and as you mentioned Russia actually supports Maduro.
According to much of the mainstream media and Hilary Clinton, Putin is the puppet master and pulling Trumps strings.
How wrong they were it seems.
