Walking Football - who plays? 22:21 - Feb 6 with 1174 viewsrfretwell

I recently started playing it in Walton on Thames and really look forward to it. Its taken off down here in a big way. We have 50 players on Thursday mornings on 3 artificial pitches across two hours. Mainly Hammers, Chelski and Fulham fans but a great lot. Anyone thinking of getting involved - just do it, it will defo help your fitness.

Wouldn't running be even better for your fitness?

Or is this you start with walking and then after you reach a certain fitness level you move onto running?

Depends what you can manage doesn't it. I'm pretty ok health and fitness wise but a few guys have had hip and knee replacements and several are in their 70's. One is 84 ! so we give him a 5 yard exclusion zone so he can get on the ball and do something with it. A lot of experienced footballers too just not as fit as they once were. Several ladies join in too. Good football banter too.

Makes sense. So it's a case of a bit if walking, a bit of ball kicking and general socialising?

Never tried it but sounds healthy on a few fronts.

100% agree with that, I started about a month ago and absolutely love it!

Must admit that I began in a group where everyone was male, about 20 years younger, had a stride about 2 feet longer than mine, and where the "walking" resembled the Olympic sport! so I immediately got relegated! (might as well get used to it I suppose ...).

Am now in an over-65s set where I'm the only beginner, but where there's another woman, & where the pace isn't quite so fast - but it's hardly an easy stroll either - it's fast walking, & for people like me who are defenders and/or mids, rather than lurking strikers, you're covering a lot of pitch, so you quickly get out of breath - very good & fun exercise.

What surprised me was the mental exercise it needs - this week my brain got tired before my body! We play the full 90 mins, and I find it hard to concentrate for that length of time.

Lots of great people, including a Town supporter (this in a small town in West Yorkshire!) who I call Freddie, as he plays up front!

Poll: Why can't/don't we protest like the French do? 🤔
