That’s the thing though. People don’t know what the Lib Dems are. In Labour areas they fight elections as being more left than Labour. In Tory areas they fight as being like caring Tories.

The Lib Dem’s having had an identity for a very long time.

Isn't that basically the definition of both the LDs as a party and their policies? Take bits from both sides, socially and economically liberal in the true sense of the word. That's basically what this new centrist party would look like too, isn't it?

Personally I think Veritas should make a comeback.

In the hearts and minds of sandal-wearers everywhere they do. But seriously, they're still an established party with a good local presence. People know what they are and have probably forgiven the whole betrayal bit by now.

Thing is, they haven't forgiven the LDs, by any means*. Doesn't help that the present leader was part of all that (as well as not being very dynamic).

* I know former lifelong LD voters who still get quite enraged at the mere thought of it all.

With the Conservative party moving increasingly to the right wing and Labour moving to the left wing at the same time, this leaves a huge gap in the middle ground of UK politics (where most general elections are won) and plenty of room for a genuine third party to move into. Labour have to realise at some point that Jeremy Corbyn could not win an election against a Conservative party in complete disarray, that was his big chance and he/they blew it. Many Labour supporters criticise Tony Blair but by taking the middle ground he won a landslide victory in the 1997 general election, was PM for 10 years and won 3 general elections, this seems to have been forgotten by Corbyn supporters.

Blair wasnt "middle ground" though, he just seemed like that. He was pretty hard to the left.

The liberal betrayal is currently getting trumped by Labour's hugely more significant version over Brexit.

Roll on any new party - can't support the Brexit-supporting, jew bashing fake kinder-wayers which Corbyn leads.

The non socialist Lib Dems and Tory-lite in red rosettes have finally been exposed, many of which helped sell off the NHS in office under Blair and Brown, signed up to the Lisbon Treaty and will drag the UK kicking and screaming to the Euro and open borders. Good riddance to them for Labour and credit to Corbyn for not giving into them and standing by his own, and the Labour Parties, principles.

It's time to make the best of it.

There is a technical problem which interferes with that argument: Up to the 2010 GE, the Labour party had a large reserve of mostly safe seats in Scotland (41). With the eruption of the SNP in 2015, that was cut to one, creeping up to seven in 2017 (fewer than the Conservatives).

That 34-seat deficit pushes Labour a long way into their list of targets before they can begin to think of overhauling the Conservatives, let alone gaining an overall majority.

When you value your personal monetary wealth and put the needs of big business before your democracy, then you really can't claim to be on the left wing. This has shown by what's happened with the post Independence debate. I really cannot see the real difference between them and hardline supporters of pro-market/EU Tories such as Heath, Thatcher, Major, and their supporters now. The reality is the EU and Globalism in general is a fundamentally right-wing, big business driven thing with much central control and is very bad for the working class around the world, now I consider myself a true moderate, neither left or right, but seeing a mob of wealthy Tories, Lib Dems and Labour MP's and their cult do everything they can to reverse a referendum result they opposed, and demonize the average people as ill-educated, low-IQ, lesser humans because of the way they decided to vote sickens me to the core. We're becoming utterly intolerant in this country.

They don't know any other way by now but to follow the money. That has always been the leftist critique of the EU. It could have been a brilliant union, fair and equal and a bulwark against capitalist superstates like the US and China, but instead it started removing elected governments and installing economists as politicians.

Open borders are literally a Marxist dream and goal, along with one super-currency controlled centrally. The point about PFI which I assume is the one you are making is a fair one but in part this was done to change the way Govt debt was reported.

Hang on, you're saying that rapacious hedge fund managers like Farage and Rees-Mogg, along with their mate Johnson, are defenders of the working class when the EU, with its raft of workers protection legislation is not?

Also, by favouring nationalism over globalism, are you not merely sacrificing the jobs of other workers (in poorer parts of the world) to secure our own?
