Another brexit lie expose by Gove 15:11 - Feb 20 with 1821 viewsNo9

Mr Gove confirmed the brexiteers promise that food will become very cheap after brexit because here will be no tariffs is WRONG.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/19/brexit-uk-will-apply-food-tarif

Taxes to protect farmers in the UK may well make food much more expensive.

No mention in that article of the proposed trade deal with New Zealand - the Kiwis are not going to stand for hefty tariffs being placed on their lamb so it is either no trade deal with NZ or a deal and most Welsh hill farmers going out of business (and crofters in Scotland surviving because they switch to Nae in the next IndyRef and we rejoin the EU but have to take the Euro too - thanks a bunch Brexiteers).

Equally, we're all environmentalists on here more or less, buying and eating less food and having it travel shorter distances to our plate is a huge benefit to the environment.

It could well be a case of what the left has been arguing for, for decades, is to live within our environmental means rather than this destructive mass farming could actually be an unforeseen benefit of the UK's independence from the EU.

It may well make us choose our food purchases (and where it comes from) more wisely and hopefully deter people from buying much of the pre-packaged, processed, artificially preserved poison we're eating by the ton right now.

It's time to make the best of it.

This isn't the plan though. It sounds like they want to open us up to US and other overseas markets where transport distances will be increased and there are genuine concerns over being able to maintain quality.

Having said that, we don't have to follow their plan do we. So maybe there is hope.

Most farms in NZ and Australia seem to belong to the Chinese these days, and most of the meat heads off to China.

The Cretinous Wing of The Stupid Party want an end to anything that smacks of the regulation and control of The Highly Successful Private Sector.

That will mean more and more food will become nastier, more processed and less nutritious.

Or American Food, as one can also call it.

Lamb does, don't think Chinese buy hardly any (if any) beef from there, although they do buy a feck load of milk from them.

About a quarter of NZ lamb goes to China.

We will get the NZ lamb because we will pay more than the Chinese, even though we are not prepared to pay more for Welsh lamb.

Gove has at least realised that Brexit will wipe out many British farmers and is arguing to protect them; of course in doing so it destroys the lies about cheaper food prices and pisses on Liam Fox's plans for US trade deals replete with chicken just out of the swimming pool.

You know, just perhaps, this is the sort of thing that should have been thought about before triggering Article 50.

The point of independence as a benefit was to be able to have that ability to make our own plan vs having to share a plan with a verse diverse group of interests. People forget the early Green Party was anti-EU on that very basis. We could use it to our advantage.

As for the Tories plan, they can't seem to get a deal with anyone let alone the USA.It wouldn't be economical for the US to do one anyway, because the costs of shipping that much food across the Atlantic would drive the price beyond most peoples pockets.

It's time to make the best of it.

Still got time to withdraw the A50 withdrawal... good job it doesn't expire just a few days later, say 1st April.

From what Antipodeans tell me, the meat produced in Oz & NZ doesn't hit the open market. Raised, slaughtered, frozen and shipped out to China.

Likewise with the milk. And given there are 600+ Starbucks locations in Shanghai alone, the demand for milk is clearly massive.

You are expecting way too much from our political elite Steve. Thinking before triggering Article 50 would have required a genuine understanding of the complexities of the issues which our leaders expertly managed to distill to the ubiquitous "Brexit means Brexit" for several months pretty much before and after it was triggered. I fear that the decision to leave the EU will prove the most calamitous choice the British public has ever made. Democracy eh!
