Some students said they were against society proposals to "explore zionism" and celebrate the Israeli national day.
Is that their reaction or is that actually one of their proposals? If it is it might just be crossed wires about what they actually mean. Voting against the society seems odd.

“But it doesn’t do that. It stops people from inviting speakers who say Zionists are Nazis. And my right to feel safe on campus shouldn’t be subordinate to others’ right to speak out against Israel".
