The financial mess at Aston Villa - likely £100m loss 08:24 - Mar 2 with 3599 viewsElderGrizzly

Great thread on Twitter by Price of Football again.

They lost £32m before including wages. Those are paid by the parent company, but not reported yet. Likely to be a £100m loss in just one season

How did they manage to lose £32m excluding wages? Surely not possible?

£97m of admin expenses excluding wages? I don’t buy it.

This is their last year of parachute payments at a reduced amount of £15m.

They spent a lot of money (wages) on new players in their first year back. Henri Lansbury cost £2.5m but his stock was high at the time, his contract running at at Forest and he signed a 4.5 year contract at £40k a week.

Ross McCormack also on £40k, another year to run and on loan to Motherwell.

James Bree is on £23k. He won't be coming here...

And we’re supposed to be competiting with that? Yet those who bankrupt themselves are still rewarded with a better chance of survival/promotion and the FA/EFL sit back and do nothing.

Remember Leeds doing this a few years back, ended with relegation. Think Villa will still be a force next season though, not that it will concern us.

All to take our rightful position of 15th. Might have to give Evans a bit of a break in future.

Gambling, and with other people's money.

As with our own trip into administration, it's the creditors who lose the money not the person / entity being bankrupted.

I imagine so, the only conclusion to draw from that though is that football is fooked.

There was a discussion on TalkSport yesterday, but I only caught the end of it as I was driving down to Ipswich, basically they seemed to be talking about the plight of clubs like Coventry, Charlton, the role of club owners etc, the jist of it being that the football league is a collective - if clubs don't like the rules, then they have to join together to persuade other clubs to get the rules changed.

I think most of us would agree that ME could have spent more on better players over the past decade, and of course invested in better players would have increased in value if they were to be sold on, but it's too late to do anything about that now, and we are heading into L1 hoping that we will be competitive in that league, whilst more and more Championship clubs benefit from parachute payments or mad owners willing to risk tens of millions of pounds to reach the 'promised land'

I just hope that discussions have/are taking place between clubs similar to ourselves (you know, the poor ones) in the Champ and L1 to try to get the rules changed so that money doesn't kill the game completely at these lower levels.

Poll: So what do we think will happen with MM and the Aston Villa job?

They were ultra-screwed at the start of the season. I had a wager on them to go down @ 9.0 the day before they were rescued grrr.

But it looks like only enough for a season. Without promotion this season they are looking more and more doomed in the next few years.

No sympathy here. Our best team ever didn't do themselves any favours in 80/81 by beating them in the third round of the FA Cup. We played 66 games that year (Villa three times, winning every one) compared to their 46. Yes, I bear a grudge.
