NASA Confirm Water Moving On The Moon 12:17 - Mar 11 with 4389 viewsBullardsMagicMullet

Very interesting news, making the future habitable human missions to Moon more of a cheaper option. It could mean a real possibility in the near future to "mine" the moon's surface for Helium-3 to help ease the Earths reliance of oil.

"These results aid in understanding the lunar water cycle and will ultimately help us learn about accessibility of water that can be used by humans in future missions to the Moon,” said Amanda Hendrix, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute and lead author of the paper. “Lunar water can potentially be used by humans to make fuel or to use for radiation shielding or thermal management; if these materials do not need to be launched from Earth, that makes these future missions more affordable.”

The ISS is within the earth's magnetic field so is actually shielded way better than the moon, which isn't.

As an aside, what the LRO which discovered the moving water is doing, is measuring the radiation on the moon over a period of time exactly to understand how we could shield longer term visitors and how long term they should be.

Solar flares are terrifying. Our warning instruments sometimes give us much less than an hour's notice to astronauts. I'd love to go into space one day but the risks are incredible outside of just getting there and back.

I'd say so.

Particularly if some idiot drills into the moon's inexplicably explosive core ;)

I think you will find there is very good reason for China to have invested in visiting the Moon and mining its surface for resources is probably far closer than many anticipate.

Also, the idea of scale is probably mind-blowing for those who seriously think our dabbling with the surface is going to majorly impact on the Moon's future.

That said, there are real issues with some forms of mining (fracking especially) close to (as in within hundreds of miles) where people live.

Mind you, we were OK when we journeyed to the centre of the Earth weren't we?

China aren't ready to mine the moon, the reporting of their lander was over the top from the media. They are catching the US and Russia (stealing tech really does help) but they aren't there yet. They will get there though.

It's also likely that capturing and mining an asteroid might be more lucrative than mining the moon, that doesn't mean the moon won't be mined though. In many ways mining off the Earth is a much better solution to many problems pthan mining on it.

Th Van Allen belts, which are the swathes of radioactivity around the earth are mainly particulate radiation, not a huge amount of gamma.

Although Beta is in dangerous levels, it can easily be shielded against. Think back to school science, Alpha gets stopped by paper , beta by thin aluminium. VA can also be passed though quickly via the safety of your ship so in reality poses little danger. Short of needing to do a spacewalk in the middle of it, highly unlikely as you would wait Until you passed through.

Rad on the moon is similarly largely beta, space is vacuum which is what allows it to be there, doesn’t affect us on earth due to the magnetic field, even that wasn’t there, the miles of air and atmosphere would stop it.

Flares and CME are the big worry, although space is very big and the moon is very small (in reality) so tha chance of having a dangerous level flare or CME that would hit the moon is very unlikely. They are always over cautious with these things. But a well sheilded room would prevent damage in all but the worst case sensario. But technology is improving all the time. People are looking into deflection devices, not sure how successful they are as yet and so far only small scale.
