The bridge closes if the Met office suggest wind speeds (gusts) will exceed 60 mph. If the wind is side on to the bridge this sped reduces to 50 mph. They only reopen if wind speed reduces below 45 mph, they check wind speed every 10 minute and it has to be below 45 mph for three consecutive checks before they reopen the bridge.
Why they cannot close the bridge to certain groups of vehicles and keep it open for cars is hard to explain, unless they feel it is too expensive to police. |  |
