That's a fairly recent thing though, the papers North of the border (the scottish border not THE border) used to quite happily refer to Scottish football teams as 'the scotch XI'.

I understand these things when the name is offensive or has been used offensively . But Scotch? Really? Is that actually a term that Scottish people dislike?

For some only for the past 100 years or so.

For others another hundred or so before that.

Otherwise, it's a fairly recent thing.

I don't think too many hate it enough to chop you up for their haggis, but it's not a preferred term, no.

I spend a decent amount of time working and socialising in Scotland, and this getting uptight about what the English say only ever seems to come up in Glasgow, most of the other places I go seems have more of a "I don't really give a fck" mentality.

And no, this is not a passive sideways dig at a part-time poster that resides there.

I'm not sure, but they are definitely getting battered.

As a Scot I would say it is incorrect. No way is it offensive. People are far too easily offended these days. I find McLeish as manager more offensive!!

It's perfectly correct, but the fact that some modern scotsmen get uppity about it makes it a great way to tickle some 'scotch eggs'.
