Talking of civil disturbances, having driven (delay free) along the A14 at 6pm I can confirm that this was about as well attended as the big brexit march.....

The only relevant question to consider at this momentous and historic time is, what will the number be when Gav switches us all on again.

If past experience is anything to go by, the number will be considerably lower and he will have 'archived' a lot of the names.

I'm interested in finding out when the people will realise that the democratic processes in the UK are a sham.

Having swallowed terms like legally binding referendum, second referendum, people's vote, meaningful vote, MV2, MV3 and all the government promises millions of people ( including my own family members ) are clutching at this petition in the hope that it will empower them in some way.

It's pitiful to see the people of an advanced nation being strung along by government and media injected fear and false hope so easily.

Think of the implications of single issue, petition-based democracy should this happen to "appear" to change the government's mind on Brexit. It'll lead to an even greater increase in media (mainstream and social) power to mould the way we think and it will be used to divide us even more than Brexit has.

The petitions are only there to put the issues before a committee who decide if there are enough grounds for a debate to take place in Parliament. The petitions are not meant to replace representative democracy in a constitutional monarchy and once they have got to 100,000 their work is done in the broadest sense. But when you get major numbers like this signing up it also serves to remind politicians where they are failing in their representation (with a few honourable exceptions). It is worth noting that the petition to leave with no deal only has about a tenth of the signatures of this one (still enough to put in a request for a debate). And view them as a bit like an iceberg with only one tenth signing up but indicating that another nine tenths are still there out of view - so forty million potential Remain voters to four million Leave. Let's have a second referendum to test that, eh?

Poll: How will we get fourteen points from the last five games ?
