What the papers said 13:50 - Apr 12 with 1330 viewsunstableblue

The Sun and Telegraph getting things pretty spot on...

"McCarthy, a decent and respectable chap, did his best under testing financial circumstances. The fans could not stomach the football but McCarthy finished 14th, ninth, sixth, seventh, 16th and 12th without spending a cent."

"Hurst arrived as one of English football's bright young coaching minds, and was supposed to be the antidote to the more prosaic football offered up by his predecessor Mick McCarthy. That football was enough to keep Ipswich safe but fans had turned long before his departure; surprisingly, few now consider that to be a mistake."

It's because we were bored of the Championship. We've had 17 years with little to shout about and we've been tightening our belts too over the past 4 or 5 years so A) McCarthy and his team bore the brunt of that and B) too many people think League One will be more fun in comparison.

It'll certainly be a change and that will give a temporary boost on its own like it did with Mick leaving and Hurst joining. But, like that appointment, change can also be for the worse. And we could be talking in 10 years' time about how we're bored of League One and think we can regroup/get a fresh start in League Two.

It is true that McCarthy didn’t spend a cent but he did spend a few quid, to be fair.

when it all comes out in the wash, we'll probably see that spending in the mick era was very high compared to that in hurst's time, especially with all the players sold in pre/early season!

I don't understand this. Can you elaborate?
